Solving Strength-Toughness Dilemma in Superhard Transition-Metal Diborides via a Distinct Chemically Tuned Solid Solution Approach

Xinlei Gu et al.

Summary: Solid solution strengthening increases hardness by introducing solute atoms to create local distortions in the crystal lattice, which impedes dislocation motion and plastic deformation, leading to increased strength but reduced ductility and toughness. By chemically tuning solid solution strengthening, the hardness and toughness of superhard transition-metal diboride Ta1-xZrxB2 can be simultaneously enhanced.

Effects of substrate bias voltage on the phase structure, mechanical and wear resistance properties of tungsten boride films

Qiang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, WBx films were deposited at different substrate bias voltages to regulate their microstructure and optimize their mechanical and wear resistance properties. Increasing the bias voltage reduced the B content and improved hardness, while also increasing the relative content of the W2B toughening phase and enhancing toughness. The film grown at -120 V achieved dual optimization of hardness and toughness, resulting in super wear resistance.

Tribocorrosion and tribological behavior of Ti-DLC coatings deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc

Yongqing Shen et al.

Summary: The impact of different C2H2 flow rates on the microstructure, mechanical properties, tribological, and tribocorrosion performance of Ti-DLC films was investigated. Results showed that increasing C2H2 flow rate improved the density and uniformity of the films, but also affected hardness and compressive stress.

Inhibiting low-dimensional defects of titanium diboride coatings by Si incorporation: Toward enhanced corrosion resistance and mechanical properties

Chuanyao Dong et al.

Summary: This study aims to reduce low-dimensional defects (LDDs) in magnetron sputtered titanium diboride coatings and improve their corrosion resistance and mechanical properties through Si doping. Results show that appropriate Si doping (5.4 at.%) can significantly enhance the coating quality and reduce LDDs, but excessive Si doping (8.6 at.%) leads to the formation of new LDDs due to the appearance of amorphous phase. Reducing LDDs improves the corrosion resistance of the coating and inhibits the corrosion of Cl- and the growth of pinholes.

Layer-by-layer stacked graphene nanocoatings by Marangoni self-assembly for corrosion protection of stainless steel

Chen Ye et al.

Summary: Graphene nanosheets are widely used in anti-corrosion polymeric coating as filler due to their excellent electrochemical inertness and barrier property. However, the difficulty in forming a perfect layered structure leads to the need for micron-scale thickness in polymeric coatings with graphene nanosheets. In this study, layer-by-layer stacked graphene nanocoatings were fabricated on stainless steel using a self-assembly method based on the Marangoni effect. The anti-corrosion properties of the graphene coatings were evaluated, with the optimized three-layered graphene-coated sample showing significantly lower self-corrosion current density compared to bare stainless steel.

Sorting transition-metal diborides: New descriptor for mechanical properties

Xinlei Gu et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the mechanical properties and brittle-ductile relationship of transition metal dual-borides through first-principles calculations, revealing their remarkable structural stability and hardness. The relative electronegativity of constituent atoms is identified as a distinct indicator to regulate scattered property trends. The composite VEC-REN descriptor offers crucial insights into the mechanisms driving well-regulated property trends in transition metal compounds.

Influence of seawater depth and electrode potential on the tribocorrosion of Ti6Al4V alloy under the simulated deep-sea environment by in-situ electrochemical technique

Pengwei Ren et al.

Summary: The tribocorrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy in a simulated deep-sea environment was investigated, revealing that the tribocorrosion rate increases with hydrostatic pressure and potential. This increase in tribocorrosion rate is mainly due to delamination wear and a synergistic effect of mechanical wear at higher hydrostatic pressures.
