Double effect of glass former B2O3 and intermediate Pb3O4 augmentation on the structural, thermal, and optical properties of borate network

Mona Abo Zeed et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of simultaneously adding two ions on the glass network structure was investigated. The effects of B2O3 and Pb3O4 on the structural, thermal, and optical properties of the borate network were studied extensively. The experimental results demonstrated the formation of a highly transparent glass and the significant influence of Pb2+ on its color gradation. X-ray diffraction and density measurements confirmed the amorphous phase and the dual role of lead as a modifier and former in the borate network. The studied glass exhibited high thermal stability, good formability, semiconductor nature, and high refractive index, making it suitable for photonics, optoelectronics, and nuclear radiation shielding materials.

The combination of high optical transparency and radiation shielding effectiveness of zinc sodium borate glasses by tungsten oxide additions

M. Sayyed et al.

Summary: The effect of tungsten oxide additions on the optical transparency and radiation shielding effectiveness of zinc sodium borate glasses was investigated. The results showed that the addition of tungsten oxide increased the transparency of the glasses and only the hexavalent tungsten state was present. Furthermore, tungsten oxide doping increased the refractive index, nonlinear refractive index, linear attenuation coefficient values, and decreased the half-value layer, making the glasses suitable for radiation shielding purposes.

Summary: Lithium tetraborate glass matrices doped with transition metals (Mn, Cu, and Cr) nanoparticles were synthesized and their radiation shielding and optical parameters were studied. The presence of nanoparticles was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and their characteristic absorption and fluorescence spectra were observed. Additionally, the radiation shielding properties of these glass samples were found to be superior to those of heavyweight concrete mixes using magnetite aggregates.
