Construction of durable superhydrophilic activated carbon fibers based material for highly-efficient oil/water separation and aqueous contaminants degradation

Jinhui Wang et al.

Summary: Developing filtering materials with high permeation flux and contaminant removal rate is crucial for the remediation of oily wastewater. In this study, a three-dimensional composite of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with uniformly grown layered double hydroxide (LDH) was successfully constructed. The LDH provided superhydrophilicity to the ACFs and allowed for efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions. Additionally, the LDH had catalytic active sites that could effectively eliminate various organic pollutants. The modified ACFs showed exceptional removal rates for both oil and organic pollutants in continuous filtration, suggesting great potential for large-scale treatment of oily wastewater.
