Role of the grain size on the hydration characteristics of slag in an aged field concrete

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the chemical composition of partially and fully hydrated slag grains in a nearly 40-year-old field concrete in the Netherlands. The analysis reveals three different elemental zoning patterns depending on the original size of the slag grains. Small slag grains (<8 μm) exhibit a hydrotalcite-like phase in the outer rim and a C-S-H gel phase in the core after full hydration. Medium (8-17 μm) and large (>15 μm) slag grains show the presence of both hydrotalcite-like phase and C-S-H gel phase, with the C-S-H gel phase precipitated between the outer rim and the core.

Portland Versus Alkaline Cement: Continuity or Clean Break: A Key Decision for Global Sustainability

A. Palomo et al.

Summary: This review rigorously analyzes the literature on the use of alkali-activated binders in construction, aiming to refute arguments underestimating the potential of AABs as alternatives to Portland cement. It highlights the abundance of raw materials for AAB production globally and the availability of sustainable alkaline activators. The review also emphasizes the feasibility of large-scale AAB manufacturing and the urgent need for standardization formulas for commercial development of sustainable binders.

Molecular dynamics and experimental study on the adhesion mechanism of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber in alkali-activated slag/fly ash

Shizhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adhesion mechanism of PVA fiber to C-(N-)A-S-H gel in AASF through MD simulation and experimental characterization. The simulation results were confirmed by experimental data, showing enhanced adhesion with increasing Ca/(Si+Al) ratio in the C-(N-)A-S-H gel. The study provides valuable insights for the future development of high-performance alkali-activated composites based on PVA.

Fracture properties and microstructure formation of hardened alkali-activated slag/fly ash pastes

Shizhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the fracture properties of hardened alkali-activated slag/fly ash pastes, revealing that the fracture properties are mainly determined by the Ca/Si ratio of C-(N-)A-S-H gel and capillary porosity. Contradictions between the Ca/Si ratios and intrinsic mechanical properties suggest a cohesion/adhesion-based mechanism dominantly affecting the fracture properties.
