Preparation and mechanical characterization of cost-effective low-carbon engineered cementitious composites with seawater and sea-sand

Mingzheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The study aims to prepare cost-effective low-carbon engineered cementitious composites with seawater and sea-sand (SS-ECC) to solve the problem of freshwater and river sand shortage in coastal areas. High-volume of fly ash and silica fume were used to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and hybrid local polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and basalt (BA) fibers were used to reduce cost. Increasing sea-sand particle size and using 6 mm BA fibers can improve the bending and tensile properties of SS-ECC.

The greening of engineered cementitious composites (ECC): A review

Daiki Shoji et al.

Summary: Concern over sustainability in the construction industry is increasing. Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) have the potential to reduce carbon and energy consumption due to their crack resistance and self-healing properties. Continuous efforts have been made in developing greener ECC, focusing on greener binders, fillers, and fibers. Further research is needed to enhance the mechanical and durability properties of ECC, and explore alternatives for green binders and fillers.

Performance of magnesium silicate hydrate cement modified with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate

Zhen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (DKP) on the fluidity, setting time, rheological behavior, compressive strength, and drying shrinkage of magnesium silicate hydrate cement. The results show that DKP can be used as a superplasticizer to improve the performance of M-S-H cement, including increased compressive strength and reduced drying shrinkage.

Production of reactive magnesia from desalination reject brine and its use as a binder

Shaoqin Ruan et al.

Summary: The study found that using reject brine to produce synthetic MgO cement results in higher reactivity and strength compared to commercial MgO, with enhanced hydration and carbonation. The increased dissolution of synthetic MgO leads to denser structures and improved performance in the produced samples.

A generic model to determine crack spacing of short and randomly oriented polymeric fiber-reinforced strain-hardening cementitious composites (SHCC)

Junxia Li et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a generic model to determine the crack spacing of polymeric fiber-reinforced SHCCs, taking into account factors such as chemical bond and slip-hardening behavior. The model's validity is confirmed by comparing calculated crack spacing with observations from direct tensile tests. Enhanced chemical bond reduces crack spacing at small cracks but may increase spacing at large cracks, while increased slip-hardening coefficient leads to overall reduced crack spacing.

Strain hardening magnesium-silicate-hydrate composites (SHMSHC) reinforced with short and randomly oriented polyvinyl alcohol microfibers

Cem Sonat et al.

Summary: Magnesium-silicate-hydrate (M-S-H) cement has lower energy requirements and emissions as an alternative binder. A new strain hardening magnesium-silicate-hydrate composite has been developed to strengthen the matrix and overcome the brittleness of the material, showing significant strain hardening and improved mechanical properties. The new composite is expected to expand the application areas of M-S-H system.

Could reactive MgO cement be a green solution? The effect of CO2 mineralization and manufacturing route on the potential global warming impact

Runxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Reactive MgO (rMgO) is considered as a promising alternative to Portland cement (PC) due to its ability to mineralize carbon dioxide (CO2) and reduce the global warming intensity (GWI) of concrete. This study compares the life cycle GWI of traditional PC binder to rMgO binder and rMgO-PC blended binder systems, identifying that the use of low carbon energy sources and on-site waste CO2 can significantly reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, with a potential reduction of nearly 50% in net GWI per unit of strength for rMgO-PC mortars under optimal conditions.
