Isolation and Characterization of Nanocrystalline Cellulose from Ramie Fibers via Phosphoric Acid Hydrolysis

Kusmono et al.

Summary: In this study, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was successfully isolated from ramie fibers through chemical pretreatments and phosphoric acid hydrolysis. The characteristics of NCC were found to be significantly affected by the acid concentration but not the hydrolysis time.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Influence Polyamide 6 Crystal Structure, Spherulite Uniformity, and Mechanical Performance of Nanocomposite Films

Daniel A. Osorio et al.

Summary: CNCs can induce a chiral allomorph and nucleate small uniform spherulites in PA6 at low loadings, resulting in stiffer nanocomposites. Higher loadings lead to CNC aggregation and non-spherulitic crystalline features. Overall, the reinforcement mechanism of CNCs in PA6 is dominated by morphological changes, rather than percolation.

Production routes to tailor the performance of cellulose nanocrystals

Oriana M. Vanderfleet et al.

Summary: This Review evaluates the properties of CNCs from more than 30 production routes and 40 biomass sources to guide users in selecting the right material for their desired application. CNCs produced by various methods are assessed against three target properties: colloidal stability, size, and crystallinity index. Alternative production routes and starting materials are suggested to overcome challenges associated with CNC use, including improving compatibility with hydrophobic materials, resistance to thermal degradation, and colloidal stability in high ionic strength environments.

Cellulose nanocrystal based composites: A review

Jamileh Shojaeiarani et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are renewable, biodegradable, nontoxic, and low-cost nanomaterials with desirable engineering properties such as large surface to volume ratio and high mechanical strength. However, their wide-scale application is limited by surface characteristics and processing challenges, leading to research on safer extraction methods, improved surface modification, and processing techniques.
