Identification of inflammatory markers in eosinophilic cells of the immune system: fluorescence, Raman and CARS imaging can recognize markers but differently

Aleksandra Borek-Dorosz et al.

Summary: The study compared the response to inflammation between isolated human eosinophils and EoL-1 cells in terms of lipid bodies (LBs) using fluorescence, Raman, and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Differences were observed in the number and chemical composition of LBs, indicating varying manifestations of inflammatory processes depending on the cell type and stimulation.

Endothelial Antibody Factory at the Blood Brain Barrier: Novel Approach to Therapy of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Reynald Thinard et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel approach to facilitate the penetration of antibody fragments into the brain parenchyma by leveraging the homing properties of endothelial progenitor cells. The results showed that the production and secretion of antibody fragments at the blood-brain barrier level could lead to their migration to the brain parenchyma where they might exert a therapeutic effect.

Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Neurovascular Disorders-A Comprehensive Overview of the Current State of Knowledge

Ewa Rudnicka-Drozak et al.

Summary: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play an important role in neurovascular disorders and have potential therapeutic applications. Decreased levels of EPCs are associated with worse disease outcomes. EPCs show promising safety and efficacy in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and ischemic stroke.

Early biomolecular changes in brain microvascular endothelial cells under Epstein-Barr virus influence: a Raman microspectroscopic investigation

Omkar Indari et al.

Summary: Brain microvascular endothelial cells (ECs) protect the brain from pathogens, but some viruses can modulate EC pathways to enter the brain and cause dysfunction. In this study, Raman microspectroscopy was used to investigate the effects of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) on ECs. The Raman spectra showed changes in biomolecular intensities associated with cholesterol, polysaccharide, nucleotides, nucleic acid, and proline moieties in EBV-treated cells compared to uninfected cells. Molecular network analysis also revealed various associated factors that could be influenced by EBV. This study provides insights into EBV infection in ECs and specific biomolecular alterations for further investigation.

In Vitro Spectroscopy-Based Profiling of Urothelial Carcinoma: A Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman Imaging Study

Monika Kujdowicz et al.

Summary: Bladder cancer has high mortality and recurrence rates, making it a challenge to detect with current methods. Vibrational spectroscopic imaging is proposed as a new diagnostic tool for classification, revealing specific spectroscopic features of cancer cells at different stages and invasiveness. The lack of specific markers for bladder cancer cells highlights the need for additional diagnostic tools based on the identification of their chemical properties.

Raman imaging-based phenotyping of murine primary endothelial cells to identify disease-associated biochemical alterations

Szymon Tott et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy was utilized to characterize the biochemical phenotype of primary murine endothelial cells. The findings showed an increased protein content in heart EC and increased lipid content in lung EC in mice with heart failure. No organ-specific features were observed using Raman-based analysis of freshly isolated primary EC.

Neovascularization and tissue regeneration by endothelial progenitor cells in ischemic stroke

Ji Li et al.

Summary: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are immature cells capable of proliferating and differentiating into mature endothelial cells (ECs) to repair injured endothelium and form new blood vessels. The regenerative capacity of EPCs is tightly regulated by endogenous and exogenous factors as well as vascular risk factors. Understanding these regulatory mechanisms is crucial for effectively using EPCs in treating vascular diseases like ischemic stroke.

Characterizing Organelles in Live Stem Cells Using Label-Free Optical Diffraction Tomography

Youngkyu Kim et al.

Summary: Label-free optical diffraction tomography (ODT) was used in this study to characterize the cellular organelles of three different stem cells based on their refractive index and volume. The method showed that specific physical properties of stem cells can be quantitatively distinguished without the use of fluorescence or specific biomarkers, aiding in the distinction of living stem cells from normal cells.
