Hypothalamic neurons that mirror aggression

Taehong Yang et al.

Summary: Social interactions rely on the awareness and understanding of others' behavior. Mirror neurons, which represent actions of self and others, are crucial for this cognitive process. In this study, we identified mirror neurons in the hypothalamus of mice and found that their activity is essential for aggression and can even trigger aggressive displays towards mirror images.

A hypothalamic pathway that suppresses aggression toward superior opponents

Dongyu Wei et al.

Summary: Wei et al. have found that Esr1 cells in the mouse cMPOA encode the fighting capability of male opponents and suppress aggression towards superior opponents by inhibiting attack-mediating ventromedial hypothalamus cells. This study identifies the pathway from cMPOA(Esr1) cells to the ventrolateral part of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMHvl) as essential for modulating aggression in male mice. The activation of this pathway suppresses natural intermale aggression, while inactivating it increases aggression.

Hyperexcited limbic neurons represent sexual satiety and reduce mating motivation

Xiaojuan Zhou et al.

Summary: Transient sexual experiences can lead to long-lasting effects on behavioral decisions. This study found that ejaculation experience selectively activates Estrogen Receptor 2 (Esr2)-expressing neurons in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), resulting in persistent decreases in firing threshold for several days and sexual satiety in mice. Inhibition of hyperexcited BNSTEsr2 leads to fast mating recovery in satiated mice of both sexes, with larger HCN currents playing a role in reducing mating motivation in males.

A functional cellular framework for sex and estrous cycle-dependent gene expression and behavior

Summary: Sex hormones play a significant role in gendered behaviors, but the specific regulatory mechanisms are still unclear. Among different sex hormone-responsive neuronal populations, two distinct cell types are crucial for sex recognition in males and mating in females.

Social touch-like tactile stimulation activates a tachykinin 1-oxytocin pathway to promote social interactions

Hang Yu et al.

Summary: Affective and pleasant touch can enhance the firing of oxytocin neurons in mouse paraventricular hypothalamus, promoting social interactions and positive affective valence. Tachykinin 1 neurons in the lateral and ventrolateral periaqueductal gray send excitatory projections to oxytocin neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus, and their activation promotes social interactions and preference for social touch context.

Transformations of neural representations in a social behaviour network

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: Mating and aggression are innate social behaviours controlled by subcortical circuits. The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNSTpr) receives sex-specific olfactory cues from the medial amygdala and projects to hypothalamic nuclei that control mating and aggression. BNSTpr neurons shape sex- and behavior-specific neural representations in the hypothalamus, controlling the transition from appetitive to consummatory phases of male social behaviors.

Flexible scaling and persistence of social vocal communication

Jingyi Chen et al.

Summary: The study identifies the role of mouse neurons from the lateral preoptic area in regulating vocal amplitude and bout durations, showcasing a two-step, di-synaptic neural circuit motif. Social context affects the range of vocal amplitudes and bout durations, with the LPOA disinhibition motif contributing to flexible loudness and bout duration.

A photoswitchable GPCR-based opsin for presynaptic inhibition

Bryan A. Copits et al.

Summary: This study introduces a GPCR-based opsin called parapinopsin (PPO), which can rapidly and reversibly inhibit the release of glutamate, GABA, and dopamine at presynaptic terminals by coupling with G(i/o) signaling cascades. PPO alters reward behaviors in a time-locked and reversible manner in vivo, filling a significant gap in the neuroscience toolkit for rapid and reversible synaptic inhibition.

Hypothalamic dopamine neurons motivate mating through persistent cAMP signalling

Stephen X. Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that mating drive and persistence in male mice are controlled by dopamine neurons. Exposure to females triggers interest for a short time, while successful mating leads to satiety. Accumulation or suppression of dopamine signals regulates mating behaviors across minutes and days.
