Cell protrusions and contractions generate long-range membrane tension propagation

Henry De Belly et al.

Summary: This study uses optogenetics and optical tweezers to simultaneously monitor the propagation of membrane tension in cells. It finds that actin-driven protrusions and actomyosin contractions can rapidly transmit membrane tension, while forces applied to the cell membrane alone cannot. A mechanical model is proposed to explain how the interaction between the actin cortex and mechanical forces leads to long-range membrane tension transmission.

Membrane tension propagation couples axon growth and collateral branching

Zheng Shi et al.

Summary: This study reveals that neuronal axons can remotely influence growth dynamics through rapid and long-range mechanical signaling, resulting in bidirectional competition between axonal branching and growth cone extension.
