Meta-analysis of the impact of freeze-thaw cycles on soil microbial diversity and C and N dynamics

Ximei Ji et al.

Summary: The freezing-thawing cycles (FTCs) in soil due to insufficient thermal insulation have an impact on microbial diversity and C and N dynamics. FTCs lead to a decrease in microbial biomass and changes in microbial community structure. FTCs also affect functions related to C, N cycling in soil, with a significant increase in N2O emission.

Drivers and trends of global soil microbial carbon over two decades

Guillaume Patoine et al.

Summary: Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in maintaining soil functions and services, but our understanding of their spatial-temporal dynamics is still limited. This study analyzes the temporal trends in soil microbial biomass carbon and identifies the main drivers of change, revealing the areas sensitive to environmental factors. The research finds that global soil microbial biomass carbon has decreased by approximately 3.4% over the past 20 years, with increasing temperatures being the main driver of decline in the northern regions.

Positive feedback relationship between shrub encroachment and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the Inner Mongolia grassland of northern China

Yun-Duo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that the soil microbial biomass of AMF gradually increased under shrub patches during the process of shrub encroachment, while it gradually decreased under interspace grass patches. Shrub encroachment promoted the increase of AMF biomass, which in turn increased the soil available phosphorus content and further promoted the development of shrub encroachment. There was a positive feedback relationship between shrub encroachment and AMF.

How Do Freeze-Thaw Cycles Affect the Soil Pore Structure in Alpine Meadows Considering Soil Aggregate and Soil Column Scales?

Yun-Duo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) on soil dual-porosity structures in alpine regions. The results reveal that intra-aggregate porosity first decreases and then increases with increasing FTCs, while inter-aggregate porosity shows the opposite trend. The total porosity of the soil column first decreases and then increases after 10 FTCs, potentially promoting the formation of frost hummocks. The changes in total porosity are significantly correlated with the changes in intra-aggregate porosity. Furthermore, FTCs significantly decrease the connectivity of the soil column and reduce the soil water infiltration rate in the alpine meadow.

Biotic factors dominantly determine soil inorganic carbon stock across Tibetan alpine grasslands

Junxiao Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the drivers of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) stock in Tibetan alpine grasslands, and found that the relative importance of these drivers varied with soil depth. These findings highlight the need to consider different drivers in biogeochemical models for better simulating and predicting SIC dynamics.

Methane emissions during different freezing-thawing periods from a fen on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau: Four years of measurements

Huai Chen et al.

Summary: The research found that methane emissions from alpine peatlands are mainly influenced by thawing periods, with warmer and longer thawing periods having a greater impact on the annual methane budget. Daily mean emissions were highest during thawing periods and lowest during frozen periods.

Microbial seasonality promotes soil respiratory carbon emission in natural ecosystems: A modeling study

Liyuan He et al.

Summary: Seasonality is a key factor regulating soil carbon emissions, with microbial seasonality playing a significant role in soil carbon cycling. Accurately representing the seasonal dynamics of soil microbial biomass is critical for reducing uncertainties in global carbon cycle projections.

Linking soil organic carbon mineralization with soil microbial and substrate properties under warming in permafrost peatlands of Northeastern China

Yanyu Song et al.

Summary: The study found that temperature and sampling sites significantly influenced SOC mineralization in permafrost peatlands, with elevated temperatures increasing the rate of carbon mineralization. The mineralization of soil carbon was positively correlated with the concentrations of soil dissolved organic carbon, NH4+-N, NO3--N, as well as the abundances of bacteria, fungi, methanotrophs and nirK denitrifiers in the soil.

Changes in soil microbial community during shrub encroachment process in the Inner Mongolia grassland of northern China

Xia Hu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that shrub encroachment significantly affects the microorganism biomass and community composition in grassland soils. The main factors influencing the change in microbial community during shrub encroachment processes are the inherent characteristics of plants and soil physicochemical properties.

Seasonal changes in soil properties, microbial biomass and enzyme activities across the soil profile in two alpine ecosystems

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that soil properties and microbial biomass generally decline with increasing soil depth in alpine ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau, while they are more variable during the growing season. In contrast, extracellular enzyme activities show insignificant variation across the soil profile and with time.
