Reconstructed precipitation in the Lohit River basin, southern Tibetan Plateau since 1720 CE and its weak linkages with monsoon-season Brahmaputra discharge

Weipeng Yue et al.

Summary: In this study, tree-ring cores from Pinus densata and Picea brachytyla in the southern Tibetan Plateau were used to reconstruct hydrological annual precipitation for the Lohit River basin from 1720 to 2019. The reconstructed precipitation was closely linked to glacier mass balance and captured recent dry trends, consistent with other tree-ring-based reconstructions but inconsistent with recorded monsoon-season Brahmaputra discharge.

A reconstruction of June-July temperature since AD 1383 for Western Sichuan Plateau, China using tree-ring width

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed summer temperatures back to 1383 for the Western Sichuan Plateau region and identified five warm periods and five cold periods over the past 623 years. The reconstruction showed high consistency with observed data and regional temperature reconstruction series, indicating its reliability in reflecting historical temperature variations in the area.

Higher sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean during the Last Interglacial weakened the South Asian monsoon

Yiming Wang et al.

Summary: Addressing and anticipating future South Asian monsoon changes is crucial for the food security and socioeconomic well-being of a quarter of the world's population. However, climate model projections show discrepancies in monsoon variability, and our understanding of the monsoon response to warm climate change scenarios is limited. This study compares Indian summer monsoon variability during different interglacial periods and highlights the importance of both solar insolation and internal climatic feedbacks in driving monsoon intensity.

Variability of the Early Summer Temperature in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau in Recent Centuries and the Linkage to the Indian Ocean Basin Mode

Jinjian Li et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the temperature field of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP) using tree-ring data and found that the reconstructed temperature field is representative of spatial distribution characteristics. The study also found that the temperature changes in the SETP are mainly synchronous with those in the middle and low latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere.

Hydrological Extremes in the Upper Yangtze River Over the Past 700 yr Inferred From a Tree Ring δ18O Record

Wenling An et al.

Summary: Global warming has had a significant impact on the hydrological cycles in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The region has experienced an increase in both extreme floods and droughts, with a trend towards drier conditions and increased drought probability since the 1850s. The frequency of hydrological droughts in recent decades has exceeded natural variability, and this is linked to the variability of the Indian summer monsoon. The increase in hydrological droughts is consistent with the observed trend of a weaker Indian summer monsoon and rising temperatures, which is caused by global warming.

Ecological and societal effects of Central Asian streamflow variation over the past eight centuries

Feng Chen et al.

Summary: Understanding changes in water availability is crucial for Central Asia. However, long-term streamflow reconstructions are lacking. Based on a study of spruce tree rings from the Tien Shan Mountains, we found that periods of high streamflow coincided with the Mongol expansion and the rise of the Timurid Empire. Furthermore, we suggest that the streamflow variation may be linked to plague outbreaks in Central Asia and Europe's Black Death pandemics. We also discovered that low streamflow in the 20th century is unprecedented and worsened the Aral Sea crisis.

Increasing extreme events in the central Himalaya revealed from a tree-ring based multi-century streamflow reconstruction of Karnali River Basin

Narayan Prasad Gaire et al.

Summary: The study investigates and reconstructs the historical hydroclimate variability of the Karnali River catchment in Nepal. The findings reveal past pluvial and low-flow periods, as well as an increasing frequency of extreme low-flow and pluvial events in the recent century. The study also identifies periodicities in the streamflow series that are teleconnected with climate modes like ENSO and PDO. The research provides valuable insights for water resource management and policies amidst current and future climate change.

A comprehensive review on coupled processes and mechanisms of soil-vegetation-hydrology, and recent research advances

Zhongkai Li et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research advances in coupled soil-vegetation-hydrological processes at different spatial scales and summarizes the spatial upscaling methods and modeling approaches. The article identifies and summarizes the coupling processes and analyzes the limitations and knowledge gaps in observations, mechanisms, scaling methods, and modeling approaches. To achieve a deep integration of various coupling processes across different spatiotemporal scales, future work should strengthen observations and mechanism studies, develop new scaling methods, and consider the effects of plant behavior and soil hydraulic properties.

The unusual recent streamflow declines in the Bailong River, north-central China, from a multi-century perspective

Linlin Gao et al.

Summary: Research shows that the recent decline in streamflow of the Bailong River is unprecedented over the past few centuries, with the most severe decreases occurring in the 1990s and 2000s. Higher temperatures and declining precipitation are the main factors leading to the decrease in streamflow, with temperature having a stronger influence compared to precipitation. Continued warming is likely to result in a further decline in the river's streamflow, impacting local water supply, societal well-being, and economic development.

Late twentieth century rapid increase in high Asian seasonal snow and glacier-derived streamflow tracked by tree rings of the upper Indus River basin

Summary: The study reconstructed the June-July streamflow in the upper Indus River watershed in northern Pakistan, finding that high streamflow levels coincided with accelerated glacier retreats due to recent climate warming. The reconstruction also indicated significant reductions in streamflow during solar minima and volcanic eruptions.

Climate-driven changes in hydrological and hydrodynamic responses in the Yarlung Tsangpo River

Yuyang Wu et al.

Summary: This study combines hydrological and 2-D hydrodynamic numerical modelling to provide a better representation of water resources and wetland dynamics in the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin in High Asia, showing significant impacts of climate change. Temperature exhibits a significant upward trend, while precipitation variations differ, resulting in noticeable differences in runoff changes in different areas.

Moisture variation inferred from tree rings in north central China and its links with the remote oceans

Zeyu Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presented a composite standard chronology to reconstruct the moisture variation history in north central China from 1635 to 2018, revealing severe dry and wet epochs. Spatial correlation analysis with the self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index confirmed the reliability of the reconstruction, showing a link between regional moisture and El Nino-Southern Oscillations. Significant spectral peaks at 2.1-3.8 years and spatial correlation patterns suggested that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation may be forcing factors of regional moisture at lower frequencies.
