Variations in the concentration, composition, and sources of WEOM in erosion and deposition landscapes over an erosion intensity gradient on the Loess Plateau of China

Yufei Yao et al.

Summary: Water-extractable organic matter (WEOM),as the most active and mobile fraction of soil organic matter, varies significantly between erosion and deposition zones, with higher concentration, aromaticity, hydro-phobicity, and humic-like components found in the deposition zone. The differences in WEOM between erosion and deposition zones are mainly driven by changes in soil organic carbon concentration, aggregate stability, and carbon to nitrogen ratio. Vegetation inputs compensate for the loss of organic matter in sites with suitable climatic conditions and weak erosion, resulting in higher concentrations and exogenous features of WEOM in the surface erosion area.

Spatial variation in soil water on a hillslope with ephemeral gullies restored by different vegetation restoration modes on the Loess Plateau

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the spatial variation in soil water with different restoration modes in an ephemeral gully on the Loess Plateau of China. The results revealed that soil water increased significantly with depth and distance from the gully head. In the vertical direction, soil water content on the ephemeral gully floor was 1.1 to 1.2 times higher than the control, while on the restored banks, it decreased by 12.3% to 15.6% and 29.2% to 29.9% compared to the control. Along the longitudinal direction, soil water followed the pattern of floor > natural restoration > artificial planting. These findings are important for understanding spatial variation in soil water and selecting suitable vegetation restoration modes in semi-arid regions.

Dissimilar evolution of soil dissolved organic matter chemical properties during revegetation with arbor and shrub in desertified land of the Mu Us Desert

Dongxu Zhang et al.

Summary: The chemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil plays a crucial role in soil nutrient cycling and vegetation restoration. This study found that as the vegetation restoration progressed, the concentration of DOM increased in the soil. The composition and properties of DOM were influenced by dissolved organic carbon in arbor forest, while dissolved organic nitrogen mainly affected DOM in shrubland.

Temporal variation in soil erodibility indices for five typical land use types on the Loess Plateau of China

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: Seasonal variations in soil erodibility indices were detected in different land use types on the Loess Plateau, with soil cohesion, saturated conductivity, drop impact, soil aggregate size, penetration resistance, and erodibility index generally increasing, while erodibility K factor decreasing. These changes were attributed to variations in biological soil crust thickness, plant litter density, root mass density, soil organic matter content, and soil bulk density over the course of one growing season.

Impact of landscape positions on soil erodibility indices in typical vegetation-restored slope-gully systems on the Loess Plateau of China

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The landscape position of slope-gully systems significantly affects soil surface characteristics and erodibility. This study found that soil cohesion, saturated conductivity, aggregate stability, penetration resistance, and comprehensive soil erodibility index varied spatially in both north-facing and south-facing slope-gully systems. Variations in soil erodibility were attributed to differences in biological crust thickness, plant litter and root densities, soil bulk density, texture, and organic matter content with landscape position and aspect.
