Liver biopsy for assessment of chronic liver diseases: a synopsis

Aqib B. Chowdhury et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes the importance of liver biopsy in evaluating chronic liver disease (CLD) and explains the commonly used scoring systems. It also discusses the utility of liver biopsy in examining alcohol-related liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, haemochromatosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Iron overload cardiomyopathy: Using the latest evidence to inform future applications

Sirinart Kumfu et al.

Summary: Iron overload can result from hereditary hemochromatosis or secondary hemochromatosis, leading to ROS generation and cellular damage. Calcium channel blockers and antioxidants offer cardioprotective effects, while mitochondrial dynamics and RCD pathways are potential targets for drug interventions against iron-induced cardiomyocyte injury.

Molecular Mechanisms of Ferroptosis and Relevance to Cardiovascular Disease

Lai-Hua Xie et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is a regulated non-apoptotic cell death characterized by iron-dependence and the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. Excessive iron promotes the generation of soluble and lipid ROS through an iron-dependent Fenton reaction and lipoxygenase (LOX) enzyme activity, inducing ferroptosis. Cytosolic glutathione peroxidase 4 (cGPX4) and mitochondrial glutathione peroxidase 4 (mGPX4) serve as defense systems to detoxify lipid peroxidation in the cytoplasmic and mitochondrial membrane, respectively, defending against ferroptosis under normal conditions.

Cardiovascular manifestations in hospitalized patients with hemochromatosis in the United States

Kunjan Udani et al.

Summary: The study found that supraventricular arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension were the most common cardiovascular disorders in patients with hemochromatosis. There were differences in the risk of certain cardiovascular diseases between patients with primary and secondary hemochromatosis.

The Importance of Multimodality Imaging in the Diagnosis and Management of Patients with Infiltrative Cardiomyopathies: An Update

Radu Sascau et al.

Summary: Infiltrative cardiomyopathies encompass a range of genetic and acquired heart diseases with abnormal substance accumulation in the myocardium causing left ventricular hypertrophy and restrictive physiology. Contemporary cardiac imaging is essential for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Ethnic Differences in Iron Status

Wanhui Kang et al.

Summary: Iron is unique among minerals because humans lack a regulatable pathway to eliminate excess iron after absorption. Iron deficiency leads to anemia, while iron overload can result in deposition in key organs. Accumulation of iron in the body increases the risk of chronic diseases. Only about 30% of variability in iron absorption can be captured by biomarkers or hormones.

Revisiting hemochromatosis: genetic vs. phenotypic manifestations

Gregory J. Anderson et al.

Summary: Iron overload disorders, especially HFE-related hemochromatosis, are influenced by environmental, genetic, and physiological factors, leading to variable phenotypes. Men are more susceptible to severe disease manifestations, while lifestyle factors and genetic polymorphisms also play a role in iron loading and disease expression. Other genes and co morbidities can affect tissue pathology propensity, even if they do not directly impact iron levels.
