Microwave biochars produced with activated carbon catalyst: Characterization and sorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Xueyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study produced a series of microwave biochars derived from wheat straw using a granulated activated carbon (GAC) catalyst, and tested their adsorption capacity for benzene series volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The results showed that microwave biochars with larger specific surface area, total pore volume, and micropore volume had higher adsorption capacities, and the adsorption process was influenced by both physical partitioning and chemisorption mechanisms.

Influence of Specific Power on the Solid and Liquid Products Obtained in the Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis of End-of-Life Tires

Maria Teresa Martin et al.

Summary: In this study, chemical recycling was investigated as an alternative method for conventional end-of-life treatments. The pyrolysis of two different types of end-of-life tires, truck tires and mix tires, was carried out in a microwave reactor. The specific power was varied to analyze its influence on mass distribution. The results showed that chemical recycling can generate valuable liquid and solid products, and the separation and purification of these products are of great importance.

A novel microwave air heater integrated with thermal energy storage

Peter Nai Yuh Yek et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel air heater integrated with microwave heating and activated carbon thermal energy storage has been developed to investigate the heat transfer efficiency in a helical coil. The experimental results showed that convective heat transfer in the helical coil is more efficient at the high-temperature region and when higher flow rate was applied. The use of this microwave air heater shows a potentially high efficiency of energy-saving and the capacity to generate hot air at temperatures ranging from 100 to 250 degrees C in about 26 minutes.

Adsorption of the most common non-steroidal analgesics from aquatic environment on agricultural wastes-based activated carbons; experimental adsorption study supported by molecular modeling

Lenka Matejova et al.

Summary: Adsorption experiments and force-field based molecular modeling were used to study the adsorption of analgesics on activated carbons prepared from different agro-wastes. The role of pore size, carbon structural properties, and surface functionalization in analgesic adsorption was revealed, and the affinity of individual analgesics for carbon was determined. The adsorption mechanisms of diclofenac sodium salt, paracetamol, and ibuprofen were also investigated. The combination of experiment and molecular modeling was found to be a powerful tool for predicting adsorption properties.

Cost-effective sulfurized sorbents derived from one-step pyrolysis of wood and scrap tire for elemental mercury removal from flue gas

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: Sulfurized chars derived from wood and scrap tire pyrolysis were developed as cost-effective sorbents for capturing elemental mercury (Hg-0) from flue gas. The synergistic effect between wood and tire during co-pyrolysis enhanced the Hg-0 capture capability of the sulfurized chars. Chemisorption dominated the Hg-0 removal process, with organic sulfur/elemental sulfur serving as active components for Hg-0 oxidization into HgS.

Adsorption on activated carbons from end-of-life tyre pyrolysis for environmental applications. Part I. preparation of adsorbent and adsorption from gas phase

Krzysztof Kusmierek et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the utilization of activated carbon produced from end-of-life tyre pyrolysis for gas phase adsorption in various environmental applications. The process requires a temperature of 500 degrees C to obtain high-quality carbonisate and achieve complete tyre conversion. Decreasing heating rates can increase carbonisate yields, which can be applied to gas fuel storage, VOC adsorption, and adsorption of various pollutants after activation.
