Efficient Regulation of Polysulfides by MoS2/MoO3 Heterostructures for High-Performance Li-S Batteries

Pu Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel architecture of MoS2/MoO3 heterostructure uniformly distributed on carbon nanotubes was introduced into Li-S batteries via decorating commercial separator to regulate the redox reactions of polysulfides. The heterostructure provides a surface affinity to capture polysulfides and acts as an active catalyst to promote their conversion, while the highly conductive CNT enables rapid electron/ion migration. The Li-S batteries with this architecture exhibit impressive reversible and rate capacities, as well as low self-discharge capacity loss, even at an elevated temperature of 70 degrees C.

Na3V2(PO4)3-decorated separator as an improved catalysis ceramic layer for high-performance lithium sulfur batteries

Ji Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, a NASICON-type ceramic material Na3V2(PO4)(3) is developed to decorate on polypropylene (PP) membrane as a catalysis layer, which can adsorb lithium polysulfides and accelerate the conversion of sulfur electrochemistry redox reaction. Additionally, the sophisticated architecture on separator provides additional lithium ion intercalaction-extraction behavior to hinder the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides. These contributions result in excellent capacitive performance and superior rate capability in lithium-sulfur batteries.

Facilitating polysulfide confinement using N-doped honeycomb-like carbon with high pyridinic-nitrogen content for high-performance Li-S batteries

Lai Chen et al.

Summary: Increasing the nitrogen dopant content, especially pyridinic-N species, in carbonaceous materials can significantly improve the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries. However, achieving high N dopant content (>5 at.%) and regulating specific N species in carbonaceous materials are challenging. In this study, a three-dimensional honeycomb-like N-doped mesoporous carbon material with a high N dopant content (8.82 at.%, pyridinic-N content 3.49 at.%) was obtained through a phosphorisation process followed by calcining calcium pantothenate under an Ar atmosphere. The resulting sulfur cathode (S/PNMC-800) exhibited superior electrochemical performance with a discharge specific capacity of 556.7 mA h g(-1) after 300 cycles at 1 C, demonstrating the potential of this technique for the development of functional S hosts for Li-S batteries.

DFT Simulation-Based Design of 1T-MoS2 Cathode Hosts for Li-S Batteries and Experimental Evaluation

Elaheh Hojaji et al.

Summary: The main challenge in lithium sulphur (Li-S) batteries is the shuttling of lithium polysulphides (LiPSs) caused by the rapid LiPSs migration to the anode and the slow reaction kinetics in the chain of LiPSs conversion. In this study, the affinity of 1T-MoS2 substrates towards LiPSs and their electrocatalytic effects were examined. The findings suggest that a combination of 1T-MoS2 regions, without or with one and two sulphur vacancies, can improve Li-S battery performance.
