Photoreforming of Waste Polymers for Sustainable Hydrogen Fuel and Chemicals Feedstock: Waste to Energy

Muhammad Ashraf et al.

Summary: Renewable energy is crucial for environmental sustainability, and sunlight-driven fuel synthesis through water splitting is a sustainable and economical method. However, the water oxidation half-reaction in photocatalytic water splitting is challenging and requires designer photocatalysts. Photoreforming can address these challenges and convert waste plastics and biomass into valuable organic products for H2 production. This article provides an overview of photoreforming, including its mechanisms and the use of different polymer wastes as substrates for photocatalysts.

Pluronic-123 Assisted Synthesis of Cobalt Vanadate Microparticles (μ-CoV MPs) for Durable Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Seawater and Connate Water

Ibrahim Khan

Summary: Exploring different catalytic material paradigms is important for finding the best OER catalyst to produce hydrogen fuel from water. Cobalt-based materials, specifically the mu-CoV MPs synthesized in this study, show promising performance in seawater electrolytes. The annealing process significantly improves the crystallinity of the mu-CoV MPs, leading to enhanced OER behavior. However, the mu-CoV MPs electrode is not stable in connate water electrolytes.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.

Influence of Binder Crystallinity on the Performance of Si Electrodes with Poly(vinyl alcohol) Binders

Prithwiraj Mandal et al.

Summary: The use of alternative and water-soluble polymer binders, such as PVA and PAA, can improve the cycling performance of Si-based Li-ion batteries by modifying the hydroxyl groups of PVA chains. Among the binder systems investigated, PVA with the highest degree of hydrolysis demonstrated superior performance and better capacity retention compared to modified PVAs and PAA as a binder for Si anodes. The effects can be attributed to the crystallinity of the binder system, which improves electrode integrity during cycling and reduces swelling of the Si particles.

Fabrication strategies of porous precious-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting: Recent advances

Jin-Tao Ren et al.

Summary: Utilizing renewable energy to perform electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production is a promising approach to address energy crisis and environmental pollution. The development of low-cost electrocatalysts with high and stable activity for both HER and OER is a key challenge for large-scale water electrolysis. Recent innovations in porous non-noble-metal materials, including heteroatom-doped carbon-based and transition metal-based materials, have shown excellent electrocatalytic performance for overall water splitting. Understanding the structure-activity correlation of these materials provides insights for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts based on non-precious carbon or metal materials in the future.

Mass transport-enhanced electrodeposition of Ni-S-P-O films on nickel foam for electrochemical water splitting

Raul A. Marquez-Montes et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the preparation of uniform Ni-P-O, Ni-S-O, and Ni-S-P-O electrocatalytic films on nickel foam substrates through flow cell-assisted electrodeposition, with the Ni-S-P-O films exhibiting superior electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. The best-performing NiSP/NF sample showed relatively low overpotentials for HER and OER under alkaline conditions, and the electrodeposited films improved performance through oxidation reactions. Overall, high-quality electrocatalysts can be obtained using a simple and reproducible electrodeposition method in a robust 3D-printed flow cell.
