All-graphene geometric terahertz metasurfaces for generating multi-dimensional focused vortex beams

Hui Li et al.

Summary: In this study, an all-graphene geometric metasurface operating in the terahertz band is proposed and investigated. It can generate focused scalar vortex beams with polarization-independent properties by introducing a superposition of two helical phases. By embedding polarization modulation, multiple focused vortices with inhomogeneous polarization properties can be generated. The proposed design scheme has a greater degree of freedom and can find potential applications in meta-optics, high-tolerance edge imaging, and high-capacity optical communications.

Unlocking the potential of organic-inorganic hybrids in microwave gas sensors: Rapid and selective NH3 sensing at room-temperature

Ningyi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly sensitive, selective, and stable microwave gas sensor (MGS) composed of an ultra-narrowband microwave filter transducer and an organic-inorganic hybrid sensitive material (multilayered structured polyaniline (PANI)SnO2) was reported for the first time. The MGS showed the capability to selectively detect low concentration of ammonia (NH3) with high sensitivity, fast response speed, and anti-humidity capacity at room temperature. This work not only develops a new class of microwave sensing functional materials, but also demonstrates the concept of tuning relative permittivity for constructing outstanding performance microwave gas sensor.

Interlayer interaction mechanism and its regulation on optical properties of bilayer SiCNSs

Shuang-Shuang Kong et al.

Summary: The interlayer interaction mechanism of bilayer silicon carbide nanosheets (BL-SiCNSs) and its effect on optical properties are studied in this paper. An interlayer coupling model is constructed that allows for more convenient control of the photoelectric properties. The results show that stronger interlayer coupling leads to smaller band gap and changes in absorption peaks. Strong interlayer coupling can produce dispersion and regulate optical transmission properties. The findings provide a meaningful theoretical basis for further study of SiCNSs optoelectronic devices.

Microwave heating of carbon materials for on-demand thermal patterning via tunable electromagnetic resonators

Di Li et al.

Summary: Recently, the interest in thermal manipulation in carbon materials using microwave heating has increased. Microwave heating has advantages such as non-contact heating, fast temperature response, and low energy consumption. However, the lack of effective control methods on electromagnetic properties has made it challenging to achieve real-time thermal manipulation. In this study, we propose a solution by using tunable electromagnetic resonators, allowing pixel-controlled microwave heating in carbon materials. The experimental results show that the microwave absorbance and heating rate can be tuned, suggesting potential applications in customized materials processing, thermal display, deicing, and defrosting.

Theory, Analysis, and Design of Metasurfaces for Smart Radio Environments

E. MARTINI et al.

Summary: The term "metasurface" refers to an artificial surface composed of electrically small elements that collectively behave like a homogeneous boundary to an interacting electromagnetic field. Metasurfaces, or MTSs, are gaining popularity due to their technological simplicity compared to volumetric metamaterials. This article provides a review of the basic theory behind microwave MTSs, specifically as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), and their potential for creating a smart radio environment. The article explores two different types of MTSs: surface-wave-based MTSs and nonspecular reflective MTSs. Simplified problems are used to effectively characterize the behavior of these MTSs and accurately design the radiated and scattered fields. The article also suggests using a ray representation to describe the scattered field in the Fresnel region and incorporate MTS descriptions into ray-tracing tools for network planning. Practical implementation examples are shown, and the challenges of electronic reconfigurability are discussed.
