Enhanced softening resistance and mechanical properties of Mo2C particle-reinforced Cu-matrix composites

Xiukuang Zhang et al.

Summary: Dispersion-strengthened copper matrix composites with Mo2C particles were fabricated by powder metallurgy and rolling. The Cu-5Mo2C composite showed the best combination of performances among the three composites. Its as-rolled form exhibited a tensile strength of 405.3 MPa, a hardness of 130.7 HV, and an electrical conductivity of 88.4% IACS. The primary strengthening mechanisms were grain boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The Mo2C particles stabilized the microstructure and inhibited grain coarsening of the matrix, resulting in improved high-temperature softening resistance and mechanical properties for copper alloys.

Effect of thermomechanical treatment and length-scales on spatial distribution of CNTs in Al matrix

Qibing Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an aluminum matrix and reveals that the length-scale, thermal activation, and external applied stress play important roles in controlling the location of CNTs. The results demonstrate that long CNTs are mainly located at the grain boundaries, while short CNTs enter the grain interiors with the synergy of thermal activation and external applied stress. The understanding of these mechanisms provides valuable insights for achieving precise control over the distribution of CNTs in composites.

Investigations on the interface-dominated deformation mechanisms of two-dimensional MAX-phase Ti3Al(Cu)C2 nanoflakes reinforced copper matrix composites

Xiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of 2D MAX phase nanoflakes on the plastic deformation process of a copper matrix. The results show that the MAX phase nanoflakes and the interface structure facilitate the initial plastic deformation and achieve significant forest hardening at high strain levels. The interface-induced microstructure evolution also promotes the mechanisms of crack bridging and deflection, enhancing the toughness of the material. These findings provide a possible strategy to simultaneously enhance the strength and ductility by tailoring the geometric shape of reinforcements and their interface with the metal matrix.

Electrodeposition-based fabrication of graphene/copper composites with excellent overall properties

Jiani Yu et al.

Summary: Graphene reinforced copper composites have potential applications in various industries, but the current preparation methods are complicated and expensive. This study successfully prepared graphene reinforced copper composites with excellent overall properties by combining electrodeposition, thermal reduction, and sintering. The addition of graphene improved the nucleation process and refined the grains, resulting in improved mechanical properties. The copper matrix was purified, and the oxygen-containing functional groups of graphene oxide were partially repaired, leading to improved electrical properties. Compared to the one-step electrodeposition method, the graphene in the composites had fewer oxygen-containing functional groups, ensuring thermal stability.

Ultrahigh thermal stability of carbon encapsulated Cu nanograin on a carbon nanotube scaffold

Pengyan Mao et al.

Summary: Nanograined materials exhibit excellent properties due to their grain size effect, but often suffer from poor thermal stability. A bottom-up assembly strategy was used to create a hybrid of Cu nanograins and carbon nanotubes with enhanced thermal stability. The application of compressive hoop stress effectively inhibits grain morphology change, leading to a significantly increased volume fraction of interfaces and grain boundaries.
