Biodegradable Films of PLA/PPC and Curcumin as Packaging Materials and Smart Indicators of Food Spoilage

Martin Cvek et al.

Summary: In this study, a bio-based and biodegradable material was developed for sustainable packaging and as a smart indicator for ammonia vapor and food spoilage. The material, a blend of poly(lactic acid) and poly(propylene carbonate) loaded with curcumin, exhibited good compatibility and thermal stability. By changing the ratio of the biopolymers, the properties of the material could be easily adjusted. The material showed efficient absorption of UV radiation and the ability to provide effective antioxidant action. It also demonstrated the potential to serve as a cost-effective, easy-to-use, nondestructive, smart indicator for food packaging and NH3 gas monitoring.
