Recyclable, UV-shielding, and biodegradable chitosan-based cardanol glycidyl ether as excellent water and oil resistance as well as gas barrier coating for paper

Jihuai Tan et al.

Summary: Developing a feasible and low-cost approach to fabricate recyclable, UV-shielding, biodegradable, water- and oil-resistant coating for paper is a challenge. In this study, novel full-biobased chitosan-derived cardanol glycidyl ether (CS-xCGE) coatings with different contents of cardanol glycidyl ether (CGE) were developed for paper substance. The resulting CS-CGE coated paper showed remarkable oil resistance, water resistance, UV shielding, and improved mechanical properties compared to uncoated paper. The CS-CGE film was also found to be biodegradable. This study provides a feasible and sustainable strategy for green packaging made from biodegradable, recyclable, UV-shielding, water- and oil-resistant coating.

Transparency of polymeric food packaging materials

Susana Guzman-Puyol et al.

Summary: Transparency is an important parameter for evaluating and validating food packaging materials. Various methods such as transmittance and opacity have been used, making it difficult to compare results. This review discusses the most commonly used methods to measure transparency, with a focus on transmittance and opacity. The recommendation is to express transparency as transmittance in the visible range, accompanied by thickness value and sample images for comprehensive characterization.

Enhancement of oil resistance of cellulose packaging paper for food application by coating with materials derived from natural polymers

Fei-jie Wang et al.

Summary: Paper is widely used in food packaging due to its good mechanical strength and degradability. However, its application is limited by its strong affinity for water and oil. This study investigated the influence of air permeability and polarity on the oil resistance of coated papers. Results showed that reducing air permeability improved grease resistance, while high surface-energy coatings exhibited enhanced oil resistance due to their high content of polar components. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the paper were improved by the coating. These naturally derived materials can be used as alternatives to fluoride-containing materials to improve the wettability of paper and the quality and safety of grease-rich foods.
