Injectable thermogelling bioadhesive chitosan-based hydrogels for efficient hemostasis

Chengkun Liu et al.

Summary: A thermogelling chitosan/glycerophosphate formulation was developed by incorporating dihydrocaffeic acid (DHCA), which significantly enhanced gel-forming capacity and tissue adherence. The thermosensitive hydrogels showed improved hemostasis and reduced blood loss in both in vitro and in vivo models. The results demonstrated the potential of enhancing thermogelling and bioadhesion of chitosan-based hydrogels through noncovalent supramolecular mechanisms.

Sprayable surface-adaptive biocompatible membranes for efficient hemostasis via assembly of chitosan and polyphosphate

Chengkun Liu et al.

Summary: This work presents a hemostatic membrane system based on spray-assisted layer-by-layer electrostatic assemblies of polyphosphate and chitosan. The membrane exhibits excellent hemostatic performance, as confirmed by blood clotting tests and a rodent hepatic severe hemorrhage model. It also demonstrates good biocompatibility and biodegradability. This scalable and flexible approach can be easily adapted for other hemostatic polyelectrolytes and surface functionalization of existing hemostatic products.

Armoring a liposome-integrated tissue factor with sacrificial CaCO3 to form potent self-propelled hemostats

Chengkun Liu et al.

Summary: The development of hemostatic materials suitable for diverse emergency scenarios is highly important. This study introduces a biomimetic nanoparticle system that encapsulates tissue factor (TF) in liposomes and is coated with liposome-templated CaCO3 mineralization. The mineral coatings synergize with the TF to improve blood coagulation, while also serving as sacrificial masks for releasing coagulation factors or propelling the liposomes via acid-aided CO2 generation. The mineralized TF-liposomes demonstrate shorter hemostasis times and less blood loss compared to commercially available hemostatic particles, making them a versatile approach for treating severe hemorrhages.

Model Liposomes Seed the Concentrated Nucleation and Anisotropic Coalescence of CaCO3 Droplets

Zhuang Shi et al.

Summary: By constructing carboxyl-/phosphate-rich biomimetic liposomes, researchers induced the formation of nanometer-sized CaCO3 clusters, which then grew into CaCO3 droplets embedded in liposomes. This study demonstrates a liposome-mediated transition of CaCO3 from clusters to liquid and further to supracolloidal assemblies, suggesting similar heterogeneous processes may occur in natural mineralization.

The role of biomineralization in disorders of skeletal development and tooth formation

Christopher S. Kovacs et al.

Summary: The major mineralized tissues, bone and teeth, share mechanisms governing their development and mineralization, including hormonal regulation and gene control. Systemic disorders and treatments can affect both bone and teeth similarly, with teeth experiencing more permanent effects due to lack of remodeling after formation. Understanding these shared mechanisms is crucial for screening and treating disorders affecting both bone and teeth.

Simulating the binding of key organic functional groups to aqueous calcium carbonate species

Alicia Schuitemaker et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the interaction of small organic molecules containing carboxylate and ammonium functional groups with mineral ions in aqueous solution, using rigid-ion and polarizable force fields. The force fields are designed to be compatible with existing models for aqueous calcium carbonate, and their application to ion pairing in aqueous solution is studied in order to quantitatively determine the extent of association.

Generality of liquid precursor phases in gas diffusion-based calcium carbonate synthesis†

Maxim B. Gindele et al.

Summary: The ammonia diffusion method (ADM) is commonly used for mineral synthesis, and advanced ADM can overcome limitations of conventional ADM. Studies have shown the presence of liquid calcium carbonate precursor species in gas diffusion systems, indicating their important role in the mineralization process. This discovery sheds light on the formation of minerals and underscores the importance of considering nonclassical mineralization processes for material synthesis.
