Intestinal flora plays a role in the progression of hepatitis-cirrhosis-liver cancer

Shuyu Liu et al.

Summary: The liver is a vital organ in human body, involved in metabolism and detoxification. Liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer are common and pose a great threat to public health. The development of these diseases is related to persistent liver damage, activation of hepatic stellate cells, and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix. The intestinal flora and its metabolites play a role in the progression of liver disease, but comprehensive reviews on this topic are lacking.

Radix Puerariae thomsonii polysaccharide (RPP) improves inflammation and lipid peroxidation in alcohol and high-fat diet mice by regulating gut microbiota

Qiong Li et al.

Summary: Polysaccharides are important active constituents of Radix Puerariae thomsonii and have therapeutic effects on metabolic disorders. In this study, Radix Puerariae thomsonii polysaccharide (RPP) was extracted and its effects on fatty liver were investigated. The results showed that RPP could alleviate hepatic injury, steatosis, and inflammation by regulating intestinal barrier integrity, gut microbiota, and signaling pathways. These findings suggest that RPP has the potential to be used as a food supplement for the treatment of fatty liver disease.

Gut-liver axis: Pathophysiological concepts and clinical implications

Herbert Tilg et al.

Summary: Bidirectional crosstalk between the gut and liver plays a crucial role in regulating gastrointestinal health and disease. Nutrients, microbial antigens, metabolites, and bile acids regulate metabolism and immune responses in the gut and liver, which reciprocally shape the structure and function of the microbial community. Perturbation of this host-microbe interaction is observed in various liver diseases and is exacerbated by impaired intestinal barrier, contributing to hepatic inflammation and disease progression.

Summary: In this study, a homogeneous polysaccharide PCP1 was extracted and purified from Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua. The chemical structure analysis showed that PCP1 is mainly composed of fructose, glucose, and mannose. In vivo experiments demonstrated that PCP1 has potential therapeutic effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by mitigating liver pathological damage, improving abnormal lipid metabolism, promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids, and balancing the composition of the intestinal microbiota.
