Applying ultrasound-assisted processing to obtain cellulose fibres from rice straw to be used as reinforcing agents

Pedro A. Freitas et al.

Summary: The ultrasound-reflux heating method is an eco-friendly way to obtain cellulose fibers with higher yield and better hydrophilicity from rice straw. These fibers show similar reinforcing capabilities, enhancing the stretchability and resistance in films. This method has industrial relevance in the food packaging field and agro-industrial waste valorization.

Water Sorption and Mechanical Properties of Cellulosic Derivative Fibers

Mathilde Simon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water vapor sorption, desorption properties, and tensile mechanical properties of four cellulosic fibers. The results showed that the sorption and desorption behavior differed between fibers, and were influenced by factors such as accessibility, amount of sorption sites, and crystallinity level. Tensile tests revealed differences in rigidity, resistance, and ductility between fibers, which could be attributed to their microstructure. The presence of water-sorbed molecules reduced the tensile modulus.

Cleaner bio-pulping approach for the production of better strength rice straw paper

Raksha Nagpal et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of crude xylano-pectinolytic enzymes in bio-pulping of rice straw to reduce environmental pollution and improve paper quality. The integration of bio-pulping strategy before chemical pulping enhances pulp yield, brightness, and physical strength properties, while reducing alkali dose and pollution. Using crude enzymes produced by a bacterial isolate, this environmentally sustainable approach can lead to cleaner pulping of rice straw.

Characterisation and utilization of heterogeneous catalyst from waste rice-straw for biodiesel conversion

Omprakash Sahu

Summary: Global demand for fuel is increasing, leading to higher utilization of fossil fuels and decreased stocks. The development of unconventional fuels, such as biodiesel, is essential due to the large amount of toxic gases emitted and the high risks associated with non-renewable fuels. A study focused on utilizing waste rice straw to create a heterogeneous alkaline catalyst for biodiesel conversion, achieving up to 93.7% conversion efficiency. This research highlights the potential for utilizing waste biomass and waste-free fatty acid materials in industrial applications.
