Rheology and tribology of nanocellulose-based biodegradable greases: Wear and friction protection mechanisms of cellulose microfibrils

Sergey O. Ilyin et al.

Summary: Dispersion of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in triethyl citrate is a typical grease with shear-thinning, shear-thickening, and viscoelastic properties. It can maintain its flowability at low temperatures (-50°C), making it potentially applicable as a low-temperature lubricant. Microfibrils reduce friction and wear on steel surfaces by filling irregularities and forming a chromium-enriched friction film.

Bitumen improvement with bio-oil and natural or organomodified montmorillonite: Structure, rheology, and adhesion of composite asphalt binders

Anastasiya Y. Yadykova et al.

Summary: The use of nanoscale particles and modifiers from renewable raw materials is a modern approach to improve material properties. This study examines the combined application of montmorillonite nanoparticles and bio-oil to enhance the properties of bitumen binder. The addition of 10% bio-oil maximizes the adhesion of bitumen to silicate surfaces without affecting its fluidity. Hydrophilic particles reduce the viscosity of bitumen and shift its solid-liquid transition point towards lower temperatures, while hydrophobic clay significantly improves the elasticity, stiffness, cohesion, and adhesion of bitumen.

Rheological properties of asphalt binder modified by nano-TiO2/ZnO and basalt fiber

Zhen Fu et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials and fibers have been proven to enhance the performance of asphalt in terms of high-temperature properties, fatigue life, and permanent deformation resistance. However, the addition of basalt fiber weakens the low-temperature performance, which can be eliminated by an appropriate amount of nano-TiO2/ZnO. The modification mechanism is mainly physical in nature.

Compatibility and rheology of bio-oil blends with light and heavy crude oils

Anastasiya Y. Yadykova et al.

Summary: This article studies and analyzes the morphological features, thermophysical properties, and rheology of bio-oil in comparison with light and heavy crude oils. The study demonstrates that bio-oil is a water-in-oil emulsion, light crude oil is a suspension of paraffin waxes in oil medium, and heavy crude oil is a homogeneous liquid. The article also explores the blends of bio-oil with fossil oils and their miscibility, showing that macroscopically compatible blends are formed only when heavy crude oil is mixed with bio-oil at a low content of the latter.
