3D-Printed, Dual Crosslinked and Sterile Aerogel Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Ana Iglesias-Mejuto et al.

Summary: In this study, reinforced alginate-hydroxyapatite (HA) aerogel scaffolds were successfully fabricated for bone tissue engineering (BTE) applications by combining extrusion-based 3D-printing and supercritical CO2 gel drying. Intermediate and post-processing strategies such as gel ageing in CaCl2 solutions and glutaraldehyde (GA) chemical crosslinking were utilized to achieve highly crosslinked aerogel scaffolds. The resulting aerogels were dual porous, bio- and hemocompatible, and had high bioactivity dependent on the HA content, marking a significant advance towards optimizing advanced biomaterials and their sterilization.

Biological Thermal Performance of Organic and Inorganic Aerogels as Patches for Photothermal Therapy

Tania Ferreira-Goncalves et al.

Summary: Aerogels are unique materials with low density, thermal conductivity, and excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, making them attractive for biomedical applications like photothermal therapy (PTT). Silica- and pectin-based aerogels are reported as the best thermal insulators, with silica-based aerogels showing better performance in PTT applications. The study aimed to assess the potential use of these materials as light and thermal insulators and delimiters for PTT, demonstrating good textural properties and safety profiles in human volunteers.

Regenerated cellulose nanofiber reinforced chitosan hydrogel scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Bikendra Maharjan et al.

Summary: This study addressed the insufficient mechanical strength of natural hydrogel scaffolds in bone tissue engineering by incorporating regenerated cellulose nanofibers into chitosan hydrogel. The resulting rCL/CS composite scaffold showed improved compressive strength, biomineralization, and pre-osteoblast cell viability. The enhanced osteogenic differentiation ability of rCL/CS composite scaffold suggests its promise as a three-dimensional bio-scaffold for bone tissue engineering.

Additive Manufacturing of 3D Aerogels and Porous Scaffolds: A Review

Halil Tetik et al.

Summary: Aerogels are highly porous structures produced by replacing the liquid solvent of a gel with air, without causing a collapse in the solid network. Additive manufacturing (AM) has been used to fabricate 3D aerogels with customized geometries specific to their applications, showing great promise in various fields such as tissue engineering, electrochemical energy storage, controlled drug delivery, sensing, and soft robotics. Postprinting processes are addressed to achieve desired properties like porosity and mechanical strength through drying and postdrying treatments.
