The potential impact of size effects on compressive strength for the estimation of the Young's modulus of concrete

Chi-Cong Vu et al.

Summary: Concrete's elastic properties are independent of concrete mixtures and sample sizes, while the compressive strength is influenced by sample sizes. There is no direct proportionality between the linear property of elastic modulus and the non-linear property of compressive strength in concrete. Using empirical expressions from building codes to estimate elastic modulus from compressive strength can lead to incorrect designs.

Modelling of infill walls in reinforced concrete buildings under low-amplitude vibrations

Fuat Aras et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the capability of conventional finite-element models to represent the actual dynamic behavior of masonry infill walls in reinforced concrete buildings under ambient conditions. By comparing experimental data with numerical models, the study identified the most appropriate method for visualizing the dynamic behavior of RC buildings under low levels of vibration. The results showed that different modeling techniques significantly affected the predicted dynamic frequencies, and choosing the most suitable model depended on the level of vibration.
