A novel approach to develop climate classification based on degree days and building energy performance

Bekarys Omarov et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel approach for climate zoning based on cooling degree days (CDD), heating degree days (HDD), and building energy performance. Analysis was conducted on 90 cities in 18 climate zones, comparing different degree day calculation methods and evaluating the relationship between degree days and building energy performance. A new climate classification approach was presented based on the patterns of degree days and energy consumption.

Separate sensible and latent cooling technologies: A comprehensive review

Omar M. Zaki et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the application of separate sensible and latent cooling (SSLC) technology in air conditioning systems. The study finds that the vapor compression cycle (VCC) is suitable for handling the sensible load, while the desiccant wheel (DW) is suitable for handling the latent load. However, further development of the DW at the component and system level is needed to compete with conventional AC systems.

Customisation of green buildings assessment tools based on climatic zoning and experts judgement using K-means clustering and fuzzy AHP

Mehrdad Sadeghi et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new framework for customizing green building assessment tools for regions or countries with various climates. The framework uses K-means clustering and silhouette value (SV) for climate classification, and fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for adjusting regulations. The research findings demonstrate the impact of local climates on sustainability priorities in green building assessment.

A Case Study of Refined Building Climate Zoning under Complicated Terrain Conditions in China

Tianyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the limited number of meteorological stations used in previous comprehensive studies of building climate zoning in complex terrain areas such as Chongqing, China, may result in the inapplicability of building energy efficiency standards in certain areas. To address this issue, the study utilized data from densely distributed surface meteorological stations in Chongqing from 2011 to 2020 and applied different standards for fine building climate zoning. The findings showed that improved building climate zoning would enhance building energy efficiency and reduce emissions in Chongqing.

Performance-based climatic zoning method for building energy efficiency applications using cluster analysis

Angelica Walsh et al.

Summary: Climatic zoning for buildings is a significant topic in building energy efficiency. Existing methods for defining climatic zones often overlook the actual performance of buildings, resulting in high misclassification rates. This paper proposes a performance-based approach that addresses these shortcomings and utilizes archetypes, building performance simulation, and GIS.

An efficient performance assessing index for building climatic zoning methods based on probability density functions

Mingcai Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a performance index (PI) for assessing climatic zoning methods by comparing the overlapping probability density functions (PDFs) among different climate zones. The results indicate that the cluster analysis method has the smallest mean PI and less variations in PIs among relevant variables, suggesting that this objective method may be better for building climatic zoning in China.
