Occupant health in buildings: Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the opinions of building professionals and implications on research

Mohamad Awada et al.

Summary: This study investigated building professionals' experience, awareness, and interest in occupant health in buildings, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their opinions. It found that there is an increasing research interest in occupant health among professionals post-pandemic, with indoor air quality being considered the most important building attribute. Professionals prioritized fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, stress, anxiety, and depression as key health issues needing attention in building design and operation.

Measurement of the water vapour permeability of earth plasters using small-scale wind tunnels under variable air flow regimes

F. McGregor et al.

Summary: The water vapour permeability of porous building materials is an important parameter to determine the hygrothermal behaviour and indoor comfort. However, there is a high discrepancy between the wet cup and dry cup tests frequently used. Previous studies aimed to improve the reproducibility of the tests, but the commonly accepted belief that surface film resistance can be neglected above 2 m/s airflow has no evidence. This study experimentally tested the influence of flow regime and velocity, finding that surface film resistance should not be neglected regardless of airflow conditions. Wind tunnels should be considered for optimal repeatability.

Physiological responses to elevated carbon dioxide concentration and mental workload during performing MATB tasks

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Elevated CO2 concentration and increased mental workload were found to be positively correlated with breathing wave amplitude, pNN50, and beta relative power of EEG, while increased mental workload was also associated with decreased heart rate variability and increased respiration rate. These physiological responses indicate that more effort is required to accomplish tasks when exposed to high CO2 concentration or heavy mental workload, impacting task performance.

Analysis of water droplet penetration in earth plasters using X-ray microtomography

T. Mauffre et al.

Summary: The study found that the surface structure of earth plasters plays an important role in water penetration, while the penetration rate due to diffusion is directly linked to bulk properties. Additionally, plasters that prevent water from penetrating too deeply also dry the slowest, raising questions about the sought-after role of an efficient coating material.
