Computational assessment of the nasal air conditioning and paranasal sinus ventilation from nasal assisted breathing therapy

Mehrdad Khamooshi et al.

Summary: Nasal cannula oxygen therapy is a common treatment for respiratory failure, but its potential for assisted breathing needs further investigation. This study used computational fluid dynamics simulations to investigate nasal heat and mass transfer and sinus ventilation during assisted breathing under different conditions. The results showed that high-flow assisted breathing had the most impact on nasal heat flux and sinonasal ventilation, while low-flow assisted breathing had minimal effect and was considered ineffective for relevant treatment.

Summary: This study examines and validates the prediction accuracy of computer-simulated persons (CSPs) with respiratory systems for precise estimation of indoor environmental quality (IEQ). The results show that the impact of breathing and body posture on indoor airflow analysis is relatively weak.

Associations of indoor carbon dioxide concentrations, air temperature, and humidity with perceived air quality and sick building syndrome symptoms in Chinese homes

Jing Hou et al.

Summary: Indoor CO2 concentration is significantly associated with occupants' perceived stuffy odor and skin SBS symptoms; higher relative humidity is related to perceived moldy odor and humid air, while lower RH is connected to perceived dry air; high humidity can reduce mucosal and skin SBS symptoms, but its benefit for perceived dry air and skin dryness symptoms is weaker if there is a high CO2 concentration level.

The impact of nasal adhesions on airflow and mucosal cooling - A computational fluid dynamics analysis

Praween Senanayake et al.

Summary: This study used computational fluid dynamics to examine the impact of nasal adhesions on nasal airflow and mucosal cooling. The findings showed that nasal adhesions did not significantly change bulk airflow patterns through the nasal cavity, but did cause disruptions in local airflow and mucosal cooling, particularly with anteriorly located adhesions. Postoperative nasal adhesions were found to create local airflow disruption and reduced local mucosal cooling on critical surfaces, explaining the exaggerated sensation of nasal obstruction.

Secondary indoor air pollution and passive smoking associated with cannabis smoking using electric cigarette device-demonstrative in silico study

Kazuki Kuga et al.

Summary: The study used a computer simulation model to predict the impact of cannabis vaping using e-cigarette devices in indoor environments. Experiments showed that aerosols exhaled by cannabis vapers are a secondary emission source, leading to indoor air pollution and passive smoking exposure for non-smokers. The study highlights the potential health risks and informs policymakers about the importance of mitigating unintended passive smoking in indoor environments.

A numerical study of the effects of ambient temperature and humidity on the particle growth and deposition in the human airway

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: A numerical study was conducted on the effects of ambient temperature and humidity on the transportation of sodium chloride particles in a human airway model. The results indicated that particle size growth and deposition efficiency were influenced by humidity conditions, with supersaturation-induced condensation significantly promoting particle deposition, especially in cold-dry conditions.

Dynamic characteristics of heat capacity of the human nasal cavity during a respiratory cycle

Seung-Kyu Chung et al.

Summary: The study found that the nasal cavity provides substantial air conditioning to inhaled air during inspiration, but this effect is reduced during expiration. Significant variations in air temperature and relative humidity were observed in the nasopharynx during inspiration, with inhaled air not reaching alveolar conditions before reaching the nasopharynx. A steady air flow of approximately 250 mL/s was suggested to evaluate the accumulated thermal state of air in the nasopharynx during inspiration.
