Fully-coupled parallel solver for the simulation of two-phase incompressible flows

Simon El Ouafa et al.

Summary: A fully-coupled solver is developed for massively parallel simulations of three-dimensional incompressible multiphase flows in the in-house code Fugu. The method solves the linearized momentum and continuity equations simultaneously using a BiCGStab(2) iterative solver with an original preconditioner and an approximation of the inverse of the Schur complement. The interface construction and tracking are based on a conservative VOF method. Test cases demonstrate the solver's ability to solve two-phase problems with excellent scalability.

Three-dimensional analysis of the effect of human movement on indoor airflow patterns

Arup Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: Human activity has significant effects on indoor airflow patterns, especially in cleanrooms, pharmaceutical settings, and healthcare environments. Experiments showed that walking can impact airflow for up to 10 seconds, with straight line walking causing significant changes in velocity. Similar airflow patterns between different walking schemes suggest the potential for predicting flow patterns of random walks.

Effects of human walking on the capture efficiency of range hood in residential kitchen

Lipeng Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigated the flow characteristics induced by human walking and the effect on range hood performance in residential kitchens using transient CFD simulation. Results showed that human walking process could be divided into five stages, and the interaction between wake and thermal plume was the main reason for thermal plume fluctuation. The study also introduced the air curtain range hood to resist the effect of human walking, showing that it could prevent the effect with less air volume increment compared to increasing exhaust rate, thus saving energy.
