An immersive multisensory virtual reality approach to the study of human-built environment interactions

Kun Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel method using virtual reality technology to study human-built environment interaction under multimodal (visual, auditory and thermal) conditions. The method allows dynamic interaction between subjects and the virtual environment, while collecting comprehensive data on human-environment interaction. The proof-of-concept study conducted with this method in a semi-outdoor environmental context demonstrates its ability to achieve high internal and ecological validity, and provides a holistic understanding of the psychological, behavioral, and physiological processes of human-environment interaction. It can be applied to further research on multisensory experience in the built environment, bridging the gap between empirical evidence and design implementation.

Restorative benefits of semi-outdoor environments at the workplace: Does the thermal realm matter?

Kun Lyu et al.

Summary: The experience of nature has psychological benefits and incorporating natural elements in workplaces can improve productivity and well-being. However, the role of thermal perception in psychological restoration has been overlooked. This study found a significant association between thermal pleasure and restorative benefits in semi-outdoor workplace environments.

Thermal respite for pedestrians in overheated urban environments-Introduction of a dynamic analysis of outdoor thermal comfort

Yichen Yu et al.

Summary: The superimposition of global warming on urban heat islands highlights the importance of outdoor cooling infrastructure for the walkability of cities. This study compared the discomfort experienced during intermittent exercise in outdoor heat to the charging of a capacitor, and provided estimates of the intensity and duration of cooling respite required by pedestrians in overheated urban climates.

Dynamic thermal pleasure in outdoor environments - temporal alliesthesia

Sijie Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated thermal pleasure dynamics in outdoor environments based on the concept of thermal alliesthesia, and found that predicting temporal pleasure change could be achieved using thermal sensation change. Different prediction models were proposed for subjects in strong alliesthesial potential zones and those in thermoneutral zones, contributing to a more nuanced interpretation of outdoor urban spaces in terms of thermal pleasure and delight.
