Distributed compact plasma reactor decontamination for planetary protection in space missions

Bhaswati Choudhury et al.

Summary: This paper presents a proof-of-concept study on the effectiveness of the Active Plasma Sterilizer (APS) for decontamination in planetary protection. The APS uses Compact Portable Plasma Reactors (CPPRs) to produce cold plasma and reactive species like ozone for decontamination. Tests were performed on pathogenic bacteria and materials relevant to space missions, showing that the APS can achieve significant reductions in bacteria and sterilize contaminated surfaces within 30 minutes. The study also highlights the potential of the APS as a lightweight, sustainable decontamination technology with advantages in spatial decontamination, low processing temperatures, short exposure times, material compatibility, and disinfection of porous surfaces.

Ultraviolet C irradiation: A promising approach for the disinfection of public spaces?

Ana Rita Pereira et al.

Summary: Ultraviolet irradiation C (UVC) is an effective strategy for microbial control in indoor public spaces. Far-UVC at 222 nm is considered safe for human health and still effective for disinfection. UVC-based technology devices with high pathogen reduction levels have emerged in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical-based disinfection approaches. However, the lack of information on UVC-based parameters and protocols, as well as concerns about health and environmental risks, remain challenges.

Practical Indicators for Risk of Airborne Transmission in Shared Indoor Environments and Their Application to COVID-19 Outbreaks

Z. Peng et al.

Summary: Some infectious diseases, including COVID-19, can undergo airborne transmission. Two indicators of infection risk are proposed, which combine key factors that control airborne disease transmission indoors. COVID-19 outbreaks show a clear trend consistent with airborne infection and enable recommendations to minimize transmission risk.

Complex Pearson Correlation Coefficient for EEG Connectivity Analysis

Zoran Sverko et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the use of complex Pearson correlation coefficient (CPCC) to study and evaluate the connections between neurons using EEG brain signals. It compares CPCC with two commonly used connectivity analysis methods and shows that CPCC can provide balanced information from both measures.

Temporal and spatial far-ultraviolet disinfection of exhaled bioaerosols in a mechanically ventilated space

Tongling Xia et al.

Summary: This study experimentally explored the effectiveness of 222 nm far-UVC light inactivating bioaerosols, specifically E. coli, exhaled from a manikin in a chamber with mechanical ventilation. The results showed that the far-UVC light effectively disinfects E. coli under mechanical ventilation, but its efficiency decreases at higher ventilation rates, indicating a greater role in bioaerosol removal at lower ventilation rates.

A new UVC-LED system for disinfection of pathogens generated by toilet flushing

Alvin C. K. Lai et al.

Summary: A new disinfection system using UVC-LED irradiation was developed and tested with varying LED configurations, revealing that more LEDs did not necessarily improve efficacy, and uniform irradiation performed better than concentrated irradiation. These results demonstrate high potential for the next generation of disinfection devices.

Inactivation of foodborne pathogenic and spoilage bacteria by single and dual wavelength UV-LEDs: Synergistic effect and pulsed operation

Yuhao Lu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inactivation efficiencies of UV-LEDs with different wavelengths and combinations on common foodborne pathogens and spoilage bacteria, finding that 271 nm UV-LED displayed the highest efficiency on tested bacteria. Additionally, the comparison between continuous and pulsed irradiation on E. coli and S. epidermidis showed comparable inactivation using various UV-LED modules.
