The impact of error of refraction and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness on cognitive functions in adults with bilateral myopia

Mona Hussein et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and characterized cognitive impairment in adult patients with bilateral myopia, in relation to retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. The results showed that adults with bilateral myopia have cognitive impairment, specifically in information processing speed and episodic memory. Cognitive impairment is associated with a higher degree of myopia and retinal thinning.

Genetic Risk for Smoking: Disentangling Interplay Between Genes and Socioeconomic Status

Joelle A. Pasman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the genetic contributions, educational attainment, and interactions in relation to lifetime smoking. The findings suggest that genetic architecture of smoking has a component related to educational attainment, and genetic predictors based on EA and smoking-without-EA have distinct profiles. The study highlights the importance of disentangling different models of genetic liability in understanding the etiology of smoking.

Identification of novel loci influencing refractive error in East Asian populations using an extreme phenotype design

Xiaotong Han et al.

Summary: The global increase in myopia has become a significant concern, but previous studies have mainly focused on individuals of European descent. This study conducted a large-scale genome-wide association study in a Chinese Han population and identified three novel genetic loci associated with myopia. The findings provide new insights into the pathogenesis of myopia and highlight the role of genetic heterogeneity in myopia epidemiology among different ethnicities.

Identification of the Potential Key Genes and Pathways Involved in Lens Changes of High Myopia

Weixia Lai et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the potential key genes and pathways involved in lens changes of high myopia (HM). Through gene set enrichment analysis and differential gene expression screening, multiple metabolism-related pathways were found to be significantly enriched in the lens of HM eyes. Potential key genes associated with HM were identified, and the MAPK signaling pathway and calcium signaling pathway were determined to be crucial pathways in lens changes of HM.

Aberrant development of excitatory circuits to inhibitory neurons in the primary visual cortex after neonatal binocular enucleation

Rongkang Deng et al.

Summary: The development of GABAergic interneurons in cortical circuits is crucial for functional maturation. Studies show that retinal input can shape the integration of interneurons into visual cortex circuits. Experiments on enucleated animals suggest that retinal input influences the maturation of glutamatergic inputs to GABAergic interneurons.

The cell adhesion molecule Sdk1 shapes assembly of a retinal circuit that detects localized edges

Pierre-Luc Rochon et al.

Summary: This study explores how nearly 50 different mouse retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types use molecular recognition systems, specifically the recognition molecule Sidekick-1 (Sdk1), to become feature selective. Loss of Sdk1 disrupts the visual responses of a specific RGC type (S1-RGC) by affecting excitatory and inhibitory inputs as well as dendritic deficits. The findings suggest that Sdk1 shapes dendrite growth and wiring to help RGCs become feature selective.
