Long-term low-level ambient air pollution exposure and risk of lung cancer - A pooled analysis of 7 European cohorts

Ulla Arthur Hvidtfeldt et al.

Summary: This study, pooling data from seven cohorts across Europe, found that long-term low-level PM2.5 exposure was associated with lung cancer incidence, even below current EU limit values. There was no observed association between NO2, BC, or O-3 and lung cancer incidence. The results suggest a linear or supra-linear association between PM2.5 exposure and lung cancer risk, with no evidence of a threshold.

The toxicity of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to vascular endothelial cells

Wei Xie et al.

Summary: The environmental fine particulate matter PM2.5 is considered a significant threat to human health, particularly through its impact on vascular endothelial cells (VECs). Understanding and reducing the toxic effects of PM2.5 on VECs could help prevent the occurrence and fatality of various diseases.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Occupational exposure to pesticides and central nervous system tumors: results from the CERENAT case-control study

Summary: This study found that occupational pesticide exposure, both in agriculture and outside, may increase the risk of central nervous system tumors, especially when exposed for more than 10 years in agriculture or in open field agriculture.
