Research Progress on Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil of Smelting Sites in China

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: Contamination by heavy metals in China has significant impacts on soil quality, food security, and human health. Mining and smelting activities release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment, causing severe contamination and hazards to plants, soil organisms, and humans. Pb toxicity is particularly harmful to children. Novel approaches for controlling and reducing heavy metal pollution, such as hydrometallurgy and phytoremediation, offer potential solutions. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites remains a challenge.

Plant association with dark septate endophytes: When the going gets tough (and stressful), the tough fungi get going

Monika Malicka et al.

Summary: Dark septate endophytes (DSEs) are a group of fungi that colonize the roots of plants in stressful environments, and they possess adaptation strategies to tolerate heavy metal contamination, drought, and salinity. They form mutualistic relationships with plants, improving plant growth and physiology. Additionally, DSEs can improve soil quality and aid in phytoremediation of contaminated soils.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi-induced mitigation of heavy metal phytotoxicity in metal contaminated soils: A critical review

Muhammad Riaz et al.

Summary: The review summarizes the current knowledge regarding AMF-assisted remediation of heavy metals and the strategies used by mycorrhizal fungi to cope with stressful environments. Significant progress has been made in recent years on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of AMF in alleviating heavy metal toxicity in plants, obtaining nutrients, and improving plant performance under toxic conditions.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal and dark septate endophyte colonization in Artemisia roots responds differently to environmental gradients in eastern and central China

Liping Huo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationships between two root symbiotic fungi, AMF and DSE, in the roots of Artemisia plants across central and eastern China. Results showed no significant correlation between AMF and DSE, with each playing independent roles in response to the regional environment. AMF colonization was positively correlated with temperature and precipitation, while DSE colonization showed no significant correlation with climate or soil.

Isolation, identification, and characterization of cadmium-tolerant endophytic fungi isolated from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) roots and their role in enhancing phytoremediation

Leila Shadmani et al.

Summary: This study isolated 400 endophytic fungi from barley roots in cadmium-contaminated soil in West Iran and found that dark septate endophytes (DSE) and non-dark septate endophytes (non-DSE) had different tolerance levels to cadmium. DSE fungi species showed higher MIC and EC50 values compared to non-DSEs, indicating potential for improving phytoremediation efficiency.
