Molecular Phylogenetics of the Orchid Genus Spathoglottis (Orchidaceae: Collabieae) in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo

Farah Alia Nordin et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the orchid genus Spathoglottis in Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo is monophyletic, divided into four major groups: Dwarf Purple, Dwarf Yellow, Large Purple, and Large Yellow Spathoglottis. The split in the Dwarf and Large Spathoglottis groups might reflect early differentiation of plant characteristics.

Ten golden rules for reforestation to optimize carbon sequestration, biodiversity recovery and livelihood benefits

Alice Di Sacco et al.

Summary: Urgent solutions are needed to address global climate change, with ambitious tree-planting initiatives aiming to sequester carbon and compensate for CO2 emissions. However, poorly planned tree planting could have negative impacts. We propose 10 golden rules based on recent ecological research to maximize carbon sequestration and biodiversity recovery while improving livelihoods.

DNA Metabarcoding for the Characterization of Terrestrial Microbiota-Pitfalls and Solutions

Davide Francioli et al.

Summary: Soil-borne microbes play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems by cycling organic matter, transporting nutrients between trophic levels, and impacting plant growth. The advancement of high-throughput sequencing platforms has allowed for in-depth study of complex microbiota in soils and plants, with DNA metabarcoding emerging as a powerful and cost-effective method for characterizing microbiota in environmental samples. However, the processing steps involved in DNA metabarcoding may introduce biases that compromise the reliability of the results, making it important to consider crucial steps to ensure an accurate and standardized characterization of microbiota in environmental studies.

Allometry Between Vegetative and Reproductive Traits in Orchids

Jing-Qiu Feng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that orchids with larger diameter peduncles tend to have larger inflorescences and bigger flowers, as evidenced by the positive correlation between peduncle diameters, inflorescence length, and total floral area. Additionally, there was a strong positive correlation between inflorescence length and leaf area, as well as between total floral area and total leaf area, suggesting an allometric coordination between reproductive and vegetative organs.

Leafless epiphytic orchids share Ceratobasidiaceae mycorrhizal fungi

Jiao Qin et al.

Summary: Some epiphytic orchids in the tribe Vandeae have extremely vestigial leaves or are even leafless, requiring a large portion of carbon from their roots and mycorrhizal fungi. This study identified highly specialized associations with Ceratobasidiaceae in leafless epiphytic orchids, as well as fungal OTUs promoting germinations in different orchid genera. The mycorrhizal composition of certain orchid species is significantly influenced by collection site and host tree, providing new insights into mycorrhizal associations in epiphytic orchids.

Expansion of the orchid genus Coelogyne (Arethuseae; Epidendroideae) to include Bracisepalum, Bulleyia, Chelonistele, Dendrochilum, Dickasonia, Entomophobia, Geesinkorchis, Gynoglottis, Ischnogyne, Nabaluia, Neogyna, Otochilus, Panisea and Pholidota

Mark W. Chase et al.

Summary: The research shows that Coelogyne is polyphyletic and related to 14 other genera. Three possible solutions are considered: lumping all genera into the oldest one, distinguishing two new genera, or recognizing many new genera. The study considers the second and third options non-viable due to the lack of reliable morphological characters for identification.
