10Be exposure ages and paleoenvironmental significance of rock glaciers in the Western Tatra Mts., Western Carpathians

Tereza Dlabackova et al.

Summary: This study used the 10Be exposure dating method to obtain reliable exposure ages for eight rock glaciers, showing that they stabilized from 16.5 to 11 thousand years ago. The timing of rock glacier stabilization is consistent with other mountain regions in Europe but extends the age previously determined for rock glaciers in the Tatra Mts. There are differences in the elevation and timing of stabilization between north- and south-facing valleys, which may be caused by differences in solar radiation and glacier retreat.

Summary: During the Late Pleistocene, an ice cap formed on the highest summit of the Black Forest and the surrounding region. The deglaciation period is not well understood, but there is evidence of glacial standstills and/or re-advances. Further research is needed to determine the exact timing of the deglaciation.

Moraines in the Austrian Alps record repeated phases of glacier stabilization through the Late Glacial and the Early Holocene

Sandra M. Braumann et al.

Summary: This study focuses on reconstructing the glacier extent changes in the Silvretta Massif in the Austrian Alps during the transition from colder to warmer climate phases. The research shows that the general deglaciation after the Last Glacial Maximum was interrupted multiple times by glacier stabilization or readvance, indicating the sensitive response of the glaciers to abrupt climate oscillations in the past. The findings also reveal the existence of multiple cold phases that punctuated the general post-LGM warming trend.

Alpine rock glacier activity over Holocene to modern timescales (western French Alps)

Benjamin Lehmann et al.

Summary: Active rock glaciers are common cryospheric landforms in high-elevation mountain ranges, and they have significant impacts on the hydrology and geomorphology of alpine environments. However, the dynamics and evolution of rock glaciers over different timescales are not well understood. In this study, a multi-method approach was used to investigate the rock glacier system in the western French Alps. The results provide important insights into the displacement, age, and activity of the rock glacier.

Maximum glacier extent of the Penultimate Glacial Cycle in the Upper Garonne Basin (Pyrenees): new chronological evidence

Summary: This study examines the terminal moraine complex of the Upper Garonne Basin in the Pyrenees during the Late Pleistocene, using geomorphological observations and Be-10 Cosmic-Ray Exposure (CRE) ages. The study reveals the timing of the maximum glacial extent, onset of deglaciation, and provides evidence of glacier retreat during the Last Glacial Maximum. Furthermore, it introduces the first CRE ages in the Pyrenees for the glacial advance occurred during the Penultimate Glacial Cycle (PGC).

Origins of the divergent evolution of mountain glaciers during deglaciation: Hofsdalur cirques, Northern Iceland

Luis M. Tanarro et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the transformation process of debris-free mountain glaciers into debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers in the Hofsdalur valley, northern Iceland. The results show that the glaciers in the study area followed a similar evolution pattern to other cirques in the Trollaskagi peninsula, with retreat dynamics and cirque floor elevation influencing the subsequent glacial evolution. Ice-cored landforms have survived above the lower permafrost limit, while debris-free glaciers have been observed during the Late Holocene in higher altitude cirques.

Immediate temperature response in northern Iberia to last deglacial changes in the North Atlantic

J. L. Bernal-Wormull et al.

Summary: The study indicates that major disruptions in the North Atlantic circulation during the last deglaciation triggered climate feedbacks that influenced the course of Termination I. By analyzing the stalagmite record from Ostolo cave in the northern Iberian Peninsula, researchers gained important insights into the structure of the last deglaciation in the Northern Hemisphere.

Spatio-temporal patterns of snow in the Catalan Pyrenees (NE Iberia)

Josep Bonsoms et al.

Summary: The study on snow patterns in the Catalan Pyrenees reveals significant differences in snowfall amount between the western and eastern regions, while snow melting time is primarily influenced by elevation. Atlantic low-pressure systems bring more abundant new snow in most snow stations, with different advection patterns in autumn, winter, and spring. Atmospheric circulation is mainly influenced by the East Atlantic/West Russia and Western Mediterranean Oscillation teleconnection patterns.

The anatomy of past abrupt warmings recorded in Greenland ice

E. Capron et al.

Summary: The diversity in the sequence of abrupt changes seen in ice-core data is also observed in climate parameters derived from numerical simulations, indicating self-sustained abrupt variability arising from internal atmosphere-ice-ocean interactions. The tight decadal-scale coupling between Greenland climate, North Atlantic sea ice and atmospheric circulation during past events suggest that statistically-robust leads and lags between different components of the climate system may not be inferred during abrupt events.

Rapid deglaciation during the Balling-Allerod Interstadial in the Central Pyrenees and associated glacial and periglacial landforms

Summary: The study reveals the deglaciation process of the Baciver Cirque in the Late Pleistocene, showing that the ice thickness may have reached 200 meters during the maximum ice extent. Rapid glacial retreat occurred around 15,000 years ago during the Belling-Allered Interstadial, leading to the complete deglaciation of the cirque in a few centuries and the transformation into debris-covered and rock glaciers.

Deciphering the evolution of the Bleis Marscha rock glacier (Val d'Err, eastern Switzerland) with cosmogenic nuclide exposure dating, aerial image correlation, and finite element modeling

Dominik Amschwand et al.

Summary: This research uses various methods such as cosmogenic nuclide dating, surface creep rate quantification, and finite element modeling to investigate the Holocene development of the Bleis Marscha rock glacier. The study reveals that the formation of the rock glacier is influenced by climate change and the dynamics of older generations are less sensitive to climate. This work contributes to understanding the long-term development and climate sensitivity of rock glaciers.
