Characterization of organic matter in marine sediments to estimate age offset of bulk radiocarbon dating

Katrine Elnegaard Hansen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on radiocarbon dating of Arctic marine sediment, revealing significant discrepancies between bulk organic matter dating and dating based on fossils. The composition of organic matter, including input sources and variations in age offsets, plays a key role in controlling these discrepancies. The presence of terrigenous organic matter and reworked ancient organic matter influences the age offsets between bulk and foraminifera dates.

Marine conditions and development of the Sirius Water polynya on the North-East Greenland shelf during the Younger Dryas-Holocene

Rebecca Jackson et al.

Summary: The Fram Strait is an important gateway for exporting meltwater and sea ice to the subarctic North Atlantic. Recent observations indicate a freshening of the East Greenland Current, which may affect wider oceanic circulation regimes. Limited paleoceanographic reconstructions from the North-East Greenland shelf hinder our ability to assess the impact of rapid climatic variations on marine conditions.

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979

Mika Rantanen et al.

Summary: Analyses of observations and climate simulations suggest that Arctic Amplification has been stronger than expected and underestimated in climate models. The warming in the Arctic has been nearly four times faster than the global average over the past 43 years, which is a higher ratio than previously reported. This finding indicates the urgency and severity of Arctic warming.

Organic matter characterization of the Lower Cretaceous tight reservoirs in the Danish North Sea

Arka Rudra et al.

Summary: This study provides the first detailed organic geochemistry and petrography of the Lower Cretaceous tight reservoir units from the Valdemar Field in the Danish Central Graben. The reservoir units contain thermally immature marine Type II kerogen, with the more clay-rich layers acting as efficient seals for vertical migration. Evidence of significant oil migration is observed across all lithounits, with the Tuxen Formation constituting the main reservoir and showing the highest oil migration. Biomarkers indicate open-marine depositional conditions and a geochemical composition similar to oils charged from the Farsund Formation. The presence of solid bitumen within these heterogeneous reservoir units may influence reservoir quality and petrophysical properties.

Jurassic stratigraphy of East Greenland

Finn Surlyk et al.

Summary: The East Greenland Rift Basin consists of a series of Jurassic subbasins with different crustal configurations and tectonic histories, spanning over 600 km in length and up to 250 km in width. The Jurassic succession in the region shows a transition from fluvio-lacustrine to shallow marine sedimentation, with a major reorganization of basin configuration and drainage patterns starting in the late Bajocian. The lithostratigraphic scheme established in the 1970s and 1980s has been revised based on subsequent research, with the entire Jurassic succession forming the Jameson Land Supergroup divided into multiple groups and formations.

Younger Dryas ice margin retreat in Greenland: new evidence from southwestern Greenland

Svend Funder et al.

Summary: By generating cosmogenic Be-10 dates from bedrock knobs on outlying islands along the southwestern Greenland coast, this study reveals the final stage of deglaciation of the Greenland shelf, where a contiguous ice sheet margin on the inner shelf transitioned to outlet glaciers in troughs. The results suggest that the Greenland Ice Sheet margin retreated off the inner shelf during the middle Younger Dryas period. Additionally, variations in the extent and speed of retreat of the ice sheet margin in different parts of Greenland, as well as the complexity of the climate-ice margin relation, are highlighted.
