Role of hemoglobin structural-functional relationships in oxygen transport

Chiara Ciaccio et al.

Summary: The molecular mechanism of O-2 binding to hemoglobin has been critically reviewed in this paper, providing detailed insights into the process of O-2 uptake and release in the lungs and tissues. The relevance of structural-functional relationships in O-2 binding is emphasized, particularly in poorly vascularized tissues such as the retina, and strategies for optimizing oxygen supply to these tissues are briefly discussed.

The role of albumin and the extracellular matrix on the pathophysiology of oedema formation in severe malnutrition

Gerard Bryan Gonzales et al.

Summary: This study explored the roles of albumin and albumin-independent mechanisms in edema formation among children with severe malnutrition. The results showed that edema formation has both albumin-dependent and independent mechanisms, with extracellular matrix integrity playing a greater role than endothelial glycocalyx shedding in severe malnutrition.

How Is Body Composition and Nutrition Status Associated with Erythropoietin Response in Hemodialyzed Patients? A Single-Center Prospective Cohort Study

Wiktoria Feret et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between nutritional status and erythropoietin responsiveness in end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing renal replacement therapy. Factors such as low BMI, visceral fat volume, and high IL-6 serum levels were found to be linked to high EPO resistance. Prevention of inflammatory malnutrition is crucial in the holistic approach to anemia treatment in dialysis patients.

The Association Between Family History of Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer and the Risk of Death from Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer-based on Linxian Dysplasia Nutrition Intervention Trial (NIT) Cohort

Wan-yi Sun et al.

Summary: This study explored the influence of family history of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer on UGI cancer death. The results showed that individuals with a family history of UGI cancer had a higher risk of death from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) but not from gastric cardia carcinoma (GCC) or gastric non-cardia carcinoma (GNCC). The risk of ESCC death was more pronounced in individuals with UGI cancer in their mother, siblings, and sisters, as well as in those with 2 or more relatives with UGI cancer. The diagnostic age of relatives also had an impact on the risk of ESCC death.

Summary: Through analysis of 17 articles, it was found that the odds of tuberculosis among anemic patients were 3.56 times higher than non-anemic patients. Cohort studies showed that the hazard ratio of tuberculosis was 2.01 times higher among anemic patients. Additionally, the risk of tuberculosis increased with the severity of anemia.

Summary: Anemia is a common disease that affects around 40% of children and 30% of reproductive age women globally, leading to significant health consequences. The global burden of anemia has decreased over the past few decades, mainly due to factors such as dietary iron deficiency, hemoglobinopathies, and hemolytic anemias.
