Scaling-up high-impact micronutrient supplementation interventions to improve adolescents' nutrition and health in Burkina Faso and Tanzania: protocol for a cluster-randomised controlled trial

Ilana Rachel Cliffer et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of weekly iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation with daily multiple micronutrient supplements (MMSs) in the prevention of anemia and improvement of school outcomes among adolescents in Burkina Faso and Tanzania. A three-arm cluster-randomised, school-based supplementation trial will be conducted among 84 schools and approximately 4500 students aged 10-17, with baseline and endline surveys to assess various variables. Results will be disseminated through meetings with health ministries and peer-reviewed publications.

Prevalence and predictors of anaemia among adolescents in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, India

Shekhar Chauhan et al.

Summary: Anaemia in adolescents is associated with physical disorders, growth, and mental retardation, with higher prevalence among adolescent girls. This study fills a gap in anaemia intervention programs for adolescents by analyzing data from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India. The findings suggest that anaemia is more prevalent among rural adolescents, those with lower education levels, late adolescence, and those with no exposure to mass media. Effective public health policies targeting rural adolescents and disseminating information through mass media are needed to address anaemia in this population.

Associations of bacterial enteropathogens with systemic inflammation, iron deficiency, and anemia in preschool-age children in southern Ghana

Nathalie J. Lambrecht et al.

Summary: Anemia in preschool-age children in Ghana is largely caused by infections from enteropathogens, rather than nutritional factors. Specific enteropathogens such as enteroinvasive Escherichia coli/Shigella spp. and enteroaggregative Escherichia coli are associated with iron deficiency and anemia in these children. Improving water, sanitation, and hygiene practices can help reduce the burden of anemia in young Ghanaian children.

Knowledge Gaps in Understanding the Etiology of Anemia in Indonesian Adolescents

Kesso Gabrielle van Zutphen et al.

Summary: This review synthesized the current knowledge on the etiology of anemia among adolescents in Indonesia, revealing significant gaps in knowledge. Anemia was found to be mainly associated with iron deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, and folic acid deficiency. The study emphasized the need for further research on various etiological factors such as inadequate nutritional intake and absorption, genetic hemoglobin disorders, infection and inflammation, and menstrual disorders.
