Excess mortality associated with high ozone exposure: A national cohort study in China

Yang Yuan et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that long-term exposure to ozone (O3) may increase the risk of mortality, but there is mixed evidence particularly from North America and Europe. This study investigated the impact of long-term O3 exposure on all-cause mortality in a national cohort in China. The results showed that an increase in O3 concentration was associated with a higher mortality risk, especially in high-concentration areas.

Summary: The review provides an assessment of the disease burden, management policies, and guidelines for hypertension in China. It found a larger burden of hypertension in men with low awareness, treatment, and control rates in both sexes. Chinese hypertension guidelines offer evidence-based instructions, while policy documents set national goals for hypertension management.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between long-term exposure to PM2.5 in the workplace and glucose metabolism in asymptomatic working adults. The study found a significant association between long-term workplace PM2.5 exposure and elevated fasting plasma glucose and increased odds of abnormal glucose metabolism. Males, middle-aged individuals, and overweight and/or obese individuals were more susceptible to workplace PM2.5 regardless of smoking status.

Ecological study of ambient air pollution exposure and mortality of cardiovascular diseases in elderly

Samaneh Dehghani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease mortality and risk factors in the elderly population in Iran. The results showed a positive correlation between ambient air pollution and cardiovascular disease mortality, as well as the prevalence of high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol levels, high body mass index, and type 2 diabetes. Evidence from this study suggests that ambient air pollution directly and indirectly affects cardiovascular disease mortality by increasing the prevalence of some traditional risk factors.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between ozone (O-3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the Yangtze River Delta region in China using direct measurements and satellite observations. The results showed a significant positive correlation between O-3 and NO2, and identified the controllable O-3 related to NO2 change in megacities. These findings provide valuable insight into understanding and controlling ozone pollution.

A global observational analysis to understand changes in air quality during exceptionally low anthropogenic emission conditions

Ranjeet S. Sokhi et al.

Summary: This study, coordinated by the WMO/GAW programme, aims to understand the behavior of key air pollutants during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The analysis focuses on changes in air quality in cities across the globe, with decreases observed in NO2 and NOx concentrations correlating with reduced mobility. However, complex signals suggest that sources other than vehicular emissions significantly contributed to the changes in air quality.

Cortisol on Circadian Rhythm and Its Effect on Cardiovascular System

Nor Amira Syahira Mohd Azmi et al.

Summary: Cortisol synthesis and secretion are regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, exhibiting a 24-hour circadian rhythm that influences the cardiovascular system and other physiological functions. 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta-HSD1) is a novel target for treating metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes, with inhibition alleviating metabolic abnormalities. This review emphasizes the role of cortisol in controlling circadian rhythm and its impact on the cardiovascular system, providing insights for potential cardioprotective therapeutic agents in the future.
