Childhood trauma and the plasma levels of IL-6, TNF-α are risk factors for major depressive disorder and schizophrenia in adolescents: A cross-sectional and case-control study

Yi Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the alterations of peripheral interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in adolescents with early-onset major depressive disorder (MDD) and schizophrenia (SZ), and explore the correlation between childhood maltreatment and plasma IL-6, TNF-α levels. The results showed that plasma IL-6 and TNF-α levels were significantly elevated in patients with early-onset MDD and SZ compared with healthy subjects, and were closely related to childhood maltreatment.

Pro-inflammatory cytokine levels are elevated in female patients with schizophrenia treated with clozapine

Xiaoping Yuan et al.

Summary: This study found that chronic use of clozapine has a greater effect on the immune function of female patients with schizophrenia, resulting in abnormal expression of serum cytokines. Serum IL-2 levels were lower in female patients compared to male patients, and there was a positive correlation between serum IL-2 levels and clozapine daily dosage in female patients.

Inflammation and Brain Structure in Schizophrenia and Other Neuropsychiatric Disorders A Mendelian Randomization Study

John A. Williams et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between inflammation and changes in brain structures, and explores the transcriptome-driven functional basis with relevance to mental illness. It finds that genetically determined IL-6 is associated with brain structure and potentially affects areas implicated in developmental neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism.

Differences in inflammatory marker profiles and cognitive functioning between deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia

Dandan Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the differences in cognitive functioning and inflammatory cytokine levels among different types of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. The results showed that deficit schizophrenia patients had worse cognitive performance and higher levels of certain inflammatory cytokines compared to nondeficit schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. These findings suggest that deficit syndrome may be an independent endophenotype of schizophrenia with unique immune-inflammatory features.

High Mobility Group Protein 1 and Dickkopf-Related Protein 1 in Schizophrenia and Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia: Associations With Interleukin-6, Symptom Domains, and Neurocognitive Impairments

Arafat Hussein Al-Dujaili et al.

Summary: The study found significantly higher levels of HMGB1, DKK1, IL-6, and CCL11 in SCZ patients. NRTT patients had significantly higher levels of IL-6 and DDKI compared to PRTT and controls, with IL-10 being higher in NRTT than in controls. HMGB1, IL-6, and CCL11 explained a large part of the variance in PHEMN symptoms and formal thought disorders, while most neurocognitive functions were predicted by HMGB1, DDKI, and CCL11.

Serum interleukin-6 in schizophrenia: A system review and meta-analysis

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that serum IL-6 levels are elevated in schizophrenia, supporting the role of inflammatory abnormalities in the pathogenesis of the disease. Additionally, post-treatment, there is a significant decrease in serum IL-6 levels in schizophrenia patients, suggesting that an anti-inflammatory mechanism may be effective during antipsychotic treatment.

Do proinflammatory cytokines play a role in clozapine-associated glycometabolism disorders?

Tongtong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found evidence that clozapine has a regulatory effect on immune-related proinflammatory cytokines and influences glycometabolism indicators, both in animal experiments and clinical trials. Clozapine-treated patients showed significant increases in blood glucose, BMI, and proinflammatory cytokines, with higher dosages associated with higher cytokine levels. Positive correlations were observed between blood glucose levels and proinflammatory cytokines.

Serum level of high sensitive C-reactive protein and IL-6 markers in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia in Ethiopia: a comparative study

Feyissa Challa et al.

Summary: The study found that inflammatory markers hsCRP and IL-6 were significantly increased in patients with schizophrenia compared to controls, even after controlling for potential confounders such as age, sex, and body mass index. This suggests that inflammatory processes may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia across different settings.

Early life Adversity, functional connectivity and cognitive performance in Schizophrenia: The mediating role of IL-6

Sinead King et al.

Summary: The study found that IL-6 may mediate the association between childhood trauma and social cognition by altering default mode network connectivity. Higher IL-6 levels were correlated with higher childhood trauma scores and lower cognitive and social cognitive function.
