Comparative gene retention analysis in barley, wild emmer, and bread wheat pangenome lines reveals factors affecting gene retention following gene duplication

Yong Jia et al.

Summary: Using genomic data from Triticeae, this study explored gene retention in the process of gene duplication, and found that gene dosage constraint and environmental adaption are associated with the retention of HPT2 gene in barley, wild emmer, and bread wheat. Comparative gene retention analysis revealed that HPT2 duplicates are mainly small-scale duplicates, experiencing relaxed selection pressure and transcriptional divergence. These duplicates are enriched with molecular-binding and defense response functions, and larger gene families are more prone to gene loss. Overall, gene dosage constraint, environmental adaption, and species-specific selection are three factors affecting gene retention after gene duplication.

Production of tocotrienols in seeds of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) enhances oxidative stability and offers nutraceutical potential

Shanmukh S. Salimath et al.

Summary: Upland cotton is an economically important crop globally cultivated for various purposes. Transgenic cotton lines expressing a barley gene showed increased accumulation of vitamin E without negative impacts on plant performance; in fact, it enhanced antioxidant activity and oxidative stability of cottonseed oil, potentially providing new opportunities for improved cottonseed co-products.

EORNA, a barley gene and transcript abundance database

Linda Milne et al.

Summary: A high-quality barley gene reference transcript dataset (BaRTv1.0) was used to quantify gene and transcript abundances across 22 RNA-seq experiments, leading to the development of a Barley Expression Database (EORNA) for visualizing comparative gene and transcript abundance data. The database provides gene and transcript models for all transcripts in BaRTv1.0, allowing users to easily identify and analyze transcript data.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
