An Overview of Molecular Basis and Genetic Modification of Floral Organs Genes: Impact of Next-Generation Sequencing

Reshma V. V. Patil et al.

Summary: In plant development, flowering is a widely studied and diverse process. MADS-box genes have been identified as key regulators in both reproductive and vegetative plant development. Comparative analysis and advanced molecular technologies have contributed to our understanding of the evolution and function of this important gene family. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) have provided a better understanding of sex determination in non-model plants, and these technologies will continue to aid in identifying the full range of floral gene functions.

Differences in the Growth of Seedlings and the Selection of Fast-Growing Species in the Gleditsia Genus

Feng Xiao et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed different species of Gleditsia seedlings in terms of their genotypes, chromosome numbers, physiological growth, photosynthesis, hormone content, and gene expression. The results showed that the Gleditsia genus has a diverse genome size and is predominantly diploid. Different Gleditsia species exhibited varying characteristics in terms of leaf type, photosynthetic capacity, hormone levels, and growth rate. This research lays the foundation for Gleditsia breeding and rootstock selection, and provides insights into the mechanism of rootstock-scion interaction.

A convergent mechanism of sex determination in dioecious plants: Distinct sex-determining genes display converged regulation on floral B-class genes

Xianzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of genome sequencing and editing techniques, sex determination in dioecious plants has been extensively studied. This study comprehensively reviews the progress in sex-chromosomes, sex-determining genes, and floral MADS-box genes in dioecious plants, and proposes a convergent model that connects sex-determining genes and MADS-box genes (such as B-class genes) through a cascade regulation pathway to elucidate plant dioecy. We believe that this convergent mechanism sheds light on the understanding of gene regulation and the evolution of plant dioecy, and presents perspectives on the evolutionary pathway of plant dioecy.

The jojoba genome reveals wide divergence of the sex chromosomes in a dioecious plant

Othman Al-Dossary et al.

Summary: The genome sequences of male and female jojoba plants show significant differences in sex chromosomes, with large insertions and novel genes found in the Y chromosome compared to the X chromosome. The wide divergence of sex chromosomes suggests long-term adaptation to diverging sex-specific roles, potentially driven by factors such as differing reproductive resource allocation requirements and the stress of the desert environment. These sex-determining regions accumulate beneficial genes for each sex, leading to the evolution of many novel sex-specific genes which could be a valuable source for manipulation of reproductive performance and environmental adaptation in crops.

Differential gene expression patterns during gametophyte development provide insights into sex differentiation in the dioicous kelp Saccharina japonica

Jiaxun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differential gene expression between male and female gametophytes in the dioicous kelp S. japonica. A large number of sex-biased genes were found in mature gametophytes, related to the divergence of phenotypic traits and physiological functions between female and male gametes during sexual differentiation. The excess of male-biased genes in the mature stage may reflect different levels of sexual selection across sexes in S. japonica.
