Study on ZmRPN10 Regulating Leaf Angle in Maize by RNA-Seq

Xiangzhuo Ji et al.

Summary: Ubiquitin/proteasome-mediated proteolysis (UPP) plays a crucial role in plant growth and development, and the RPN10 subunit of the proteasome mediates ubiquitination substrate recognition. The recognition pathway of ubiquitinated UPP substrate varies among different species, suggesting different mechanisms and functions of RPN10. This study investigated the effects of exogenous brassinosteroids (BRs) on leaf angle and gene expression in wild-type B73 and mutant rpn10 in maize. The results showed that BR had a stronger regulatory effect on leaf angle in rpn10 compared to B73. Transcriptome analysis revealed significant up-regulation of CRE1, A-ARR, and SnRK2, and significant down-regulation of PP2C, BRI1 AUX/IAA, JAZ, and MYC2. This study provides insights into the regulatory mechanism of ZmRPN10 on maize leaf angle and offers a potential gene resource for maize breeding.

ZmDWF1 regulates leaf angle in maize

Yingying Cao et al.

Summary: Leaf angle (LA) is a critical agronomic trait for high-yield maize production, with ZmDWF1 gene identified as a positive regulator of LA involved in brassinosteroids biosynthesis pathway. RNA-sequencing analysis showed that ZmDWF1 mainly affects genes related to cell wall and hormone metabolism, while Yeast-two hybrid screening revealed interactions between ZmDWF1 and three proteins, suggesting a new regulatory network in controlling plant architecture in maize.

Candidate loci for leaf angle in maize revealed by a combination of genome-wide association study and meta-analysis

Haiyang Duan et al.

Summary: By scoring three leaf angle-related traits on 492 maize inbred lines, we found that leaf angle-related traits were normally distributed and showed significant variation among environments and genotypes. A genome-wide association study identified 85 significant SNPs and 32 non-redundant QTLs that explained 4.80%-24.09% of the phenotypic variation. Meta-analysis identified 47 meta-QTLs and 816 genes, as well as co-located QTLs discovered by both GWAS and meta-analysis.

The dynamics of maize leaf development: Patterned to grow while growing a pattern

Josh Strable et al.

Summary: Leaves play a significant role in the shoot system of grasses, affecting photosynthesis efficiency. The morphology and growth of leaves are interdependent and define the overall canopy structure. Research suggests that leaf morphology and growth occur simultaneously along the proximal-distal, medial-lateral, and adaxial-abaxial axes.

The genetic mechanism of heterosis utilization in maize improvement

Yingjie Xiao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that although yield heterosis in maize hybrids is correlated with minor-effect epistatic QTLs, it may be the result of major-effect additive and dominant QTLs during early developmental stages. The transition to flowering is identified as a critical stage for heterosis formation, where epistatic QTLs are activated by paternal alleles counteracting deleterious maternal alleles. The proposed molecular breeding approach targets key genes to accelerate maize breeding by reducing deleterious epistatic interactions.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
