Relationship between social support and post-discharge mental health symptoms in mothers of preterm infants

Laurel Haeusslein et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the relationship between social support and symptoms of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) reported by mothers of preterm infants in the months following hospital discharge. The results show a strong inverse association between social support and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. Social support explains 21% to 26% of the variance in these PMAD symptoms.

Summary: This study compared the effects of FCC and mFICare on weight gain and discharge outcomes in preterm infants in US NICUs. The results indicated that mFICare may have direct benefits in terms of weight gain and nosocomial infection. Further research is needed to optimize intervention delivery and determine acute and long-term outcomes for infants and families.

Feasibility of universal screening for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders among caregivers of infants hospitalized in NICUs: a systematic review

Snehal Murthy et al.

Summary: This systematic review suggests that universal screening for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders in NICUs is feasible, but referral to mental health treatment remains a significant barrier. Engaging multidisciplinary staff in program development and incorporating screening into routine clinical practice are effective facilitators for implementing these screening programs. Further research comparing a wider range of screening tools and protocols is critical to address the prevalent conditions with significant consequences for parents and infants.
