Intraoperative Technology Use Improves Accuracy of Functional Safe Zone Targeting in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Chelsea S. Sicat et al.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of manual instrumentation, computer-assisted navigation, and robotic-assisted surgery in targeting the functional safe zone in total hip arthroplasty. The results showed that robotic-assisted surgery was significantly more accurate than both manual instrumentation and computer-assisted navigation in targeting both anteversion and inclination. Computer-assisted navigation had slightly higher accuracy than manual instrumentation, but the differences were not statistically significant.

A Comparison of Component Positioning Between Fluoroscopy-Assisted and Robotic-Assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty

Nathaniel J. Stewart et al.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of acetabular component placement, leg length discrepancy, femoral offset, and global offset difference between patients who underwent hip replacement surgery with either fluoroscopic or robotic guidance. The results showed that there was a small improvement in acetabular inclination error with robotic-guided surgery, but no significant differences in other measures between the two groups. The findings question the use of robotic guidance in direct anterior approach THA compared to fluoroscopic guidance.

Total Hip Arthroplasty with Robotic Arm Assistance for Precise Cup Positioning: A Case-Control Study

Dong-hui Guo et al.

Summary: This study compared the precision of cup positioning and leg length discrepancy between robot-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) and conventional THA. It found that robot-assisted THA resulted in higher accuracy of implant placement and smaller leg length discrepancy.

The learning curve of robotic-arm assisted acetabular cup positioning during total hip arthroplasty

Babar Kayani et al.

Summary: The study found that robotic-arm assisted acetabular cup positioning during THA was associated with a learning curve of 12 cases for operative times and surgical team confidence levels, but no learning curve effect was observed for restoring native hip biomechanics or achieving planned acetabular cup positioning and orientation. There were no differences in postoperative complications between the two treatment groups.

Robotics Versus Navigation Versus Conventional Total Hip Arthroplasty: Does the Use of Technology Yield Superior Outcomes?

Vivek Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between intraoperative technology and patient-reported outcome measures in primary total hip arthroplasty. While there were some statistical differences in outcomes between different technology groups, these differences were not clinically significant. Surgical time and length of stay also showed significant variations among different technology groups.

Primary Robotic-Arm Assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty: An Analysis of 501 Hips With 44-Month Follow-up

Benjamin G. Domb et al.

Summary: This study aimed to report patient-reported outcome measurements in a large group of patients who underwent robotic-arm assisted primary total hip arthroplasty. Results showed that patients who received primary robotic-arm assisted THA reported excellent results at 44-month follow-up for multiple patient-reported outcome measurements.

Comparison of the accuracy of the cup position and orientation in total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip between the Mako robotic arm-assisted system and computed tomography-based navigation

Wataru Ando et al.

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of acetabular cup position and orientation between robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (rTHA) and navigated THA (nTHA) in patients with osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Results showed that rTHA achieved more precise cup implantation with reduced variation from the target orientation compared to nTHA. Additionally, fewer patients in the rTHA group required screw fixation for cup implantation.

Robotics in orthopaedic surgery: why, what and how?

Bernardo Innocenti et al.

Summary: Robotic systems applied in orthopedics aim to enhance joint arthroplasty surgery by providing precise and accurate support in bone preparation, limb alignment restoration, and joint kinematics. Different types of robotic systems are available on the market, each with specific features and requirements, all ultimately focused on improving surgical precision and accuracy. Surgeons considering adopting a robotic system need to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks to find the best fit for their needs.

Robotic-arm assisted versus manual total hip arthroplasty: Systematic review and meta-analysis of radiographic accuracy

Ahmed K. Emara et al.

Summary: This study found that robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (RA-THA) yields superior radiographic outcomes compared to manual total hip arthroplasty (mTHA), including better acetabular and femoral stem orientation, as well as lower global offset difference.
