The airway microbiota of non-small cell lung cancer patients and its relationship to tumor stage and EGFR gene mutation

Dan Hui Huang et al.

Summary: This study found differences in the taxonomy structure of sputum microbiota in different stages of lung cancer. Tumor stage, intrathoracic metastasis, lymph node metastasis, and EGFR mutation were associated with altered specific airway genera and metabolic function of sputum microbiota.

Altered Ecology of the Respiratory Tract Microbiome and Nosocomial Pneumonia

Ana Elena Perez-Cobas et al.

Summary: Nosocomial pneumonia is a common infection in critical patients, primarily associated with mechanical ventilation. The rise in multidrug-resistant bacterial infections has increased mortality rates, posing a global public health threat. Recent research suggests that a healthy respiratory tract microbiome (RTM) stimulates the immune system and protects against pathogen infection. However, the physiological conditions and interventions in critical patients disrupt the RTM, leading to dysbiosis. The significance of host-RTM interactions in nosocomial infections remains mostly unknown.

Convergent alteration of lung tissue microbiota and tumor cells in lung cancer

Hui Dong et al.

Summary: The study found that lung tumor microbiota from smokers contained more PAH-degrading microbes, and TP53 mutation was more prevalent in smokers. Further analysis showed that there was consistency between the changes in the microbiota of smokers and tumor cells, and TP53-mutated tumor microbiota exhibited dysregulation of the p53 signaling pathway.

Alterations of lung microbiota in patients with non-small cell lung cancer

Wen Zeng et al.

Summary: This study found that lung microbiota in patients with non-small cell lung cancer differed significantly from those with benign lung disease, with the genera Prevotella and Veillonella being the most strongly associated with non-small cell lung cancer. Veillonella was also found to significantly promote the progression of lung cancer in vivo. Metabolic prediction revealed enrichment of certain pathways that may be involved in the progression of non-small cell lung cancer. These findings suggest that the composition and function of lung microbiota undergo significant changes during the progression of non-small cell lung cancer, and these differing genera may have potential as diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets.

Sputum Microbiome Composition in Patients with Squamous Cell Lung Carcinoma

Elizaveta Baranova et al.

Summary: This study compared the taxonomic composition of the sputum microbiome between untreated LUSC patients and healthy controls. The results showed significant differences in the structure of bacterial communities between the two groups. Certain genera were found to be enriched in LUSC patients, while others were significantly reduced, indicating a decrease in beta diversity in the microbiome of LUSC patients.

The composition of lung microbiome in lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sadaf Najafi et al.

Summary: The study found that several bacterial taxa, including Actinobacteria phylum, Corynebacteriaceae and Halomonadaceae families, and Corynebacterium, Lachnoanaerobaculum, and Halomonas genera, were significantly decreased in lung tumor tissues of lung cancer patients compared to tumor-adjacent normal tissues. Despite the need for further scrutiny, this study establishes a foundation for future research and enhances our understanding of the lung microbiome's role in lung cancer. More data on demographic factors and tumor tissue types would improve accuracy in characterizing the lung microbial community in different stages of the disease and fully capturing changes in the lung microbiome in lung cancer.

Genetic damage in lymphocytes of lung cancer patients is correlated to the composition of the respiratory tract microbiome

V. G. Druzhinin et al.

Summary: Recent findings suggest that the microbiome may play a significant role in the development of lung cancer by affecting inflammation, dysbiosis, and genome damage. A study comparing the sputum microbiome of untreated lung cancer (LC) patients with chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei in peripheral blood lymphocytes showed higher frequencies in the LC group. Specific bacterial genera were associated with genome damage markers in LC patients. The study supports previous research suggesting a link between the airway microbiome and lung cancer.

Alterations of the Human Lung and Gut Microbiomes in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinomas and Distant Metastasis

Hui Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant disturbances in both gut and sputum microbiota in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, with the sputum microbiota being associated with distant metastasis (DM). Mathematical models utilizing both microbiotas showed better performance in patient stratification, while sputum models performed similarly to combined models, suggesting a potential noninvasive diagnostic method for NSCLC. Shared microbial biomarkers across different disease stages indicate the underlying progression of the disease, with signals for distant metastasis potentially detectable at early stages.

Reductive evolution and unique predatory mode in the CPR bacterium Vampirococcus lugosii

David Moreira et al.

Summary: The Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR) is a large group of bacterial lineages with small cell sizes and limited biosynthetic capabilities, where parasitism is a common lifestyle. The study of Vampirococcus lugosii, an epibiotic parasite of other bacteria, revealed that it feeds on anoxygenic photosynthetic gammaproteobacteria, divides epibiotically, and has a genome reduced in biosynthetic metabolism genes but enriched in genes possibly involved in interactions with the host.
