Temporal Dynamics of the Nasopharyngeal Microbiome and its Relationship with Childhood Asthma Exacerbation

Jinpao Hou et al.

Summary: Despite distinct nasopharyngeal microbiome (NPM) profiles between asthmatics and healthy subjects, little is known about the NPM dynamics and its relation to childhood asthma exacerbation (AE). NPM diversity decreased whereas microbial composition remained similar over time. The relative abundances of Moraxella increased while Corynebacterium 1, Anoxybacillus, and Pseudomonas decreased longitudinally. However, these temporal patterns did not differ between AE and AS groups, suggesting that short-term dynamic patterns were not sufficient to predict AE occurrence.

The bacterial community of childcare centers: potential implications for microbial dispersal and child exposure

D. E. Beasley et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation in bacterial community composition across different surfaces inside and outside childcare centers. The results showed that the childcare environment was mainly influenced by human-associated bacteria, and the bacterial community on surfaces correlated with usage and occupant density. There were greater differences in bacterial community within a classroom than among centers.

Bacterial community assemblages in classroom floor dust of 50 public schools in a large city: characterization using 16S rRNA sequences and associations with environmental factors

Ju-Hyeong Park et al.

Summary: Characterizing indoor microbial communities in 50 elementary schools revealed that classroom floor dust had a characteristic bacterial community different from house dust. Factors such as school location, degree of water damage, and building condition influenced bacterial richness and composition, but the classroom microbiome showed relative stability.

Rapid Increase of Oral Bacteria in Nasopharyngeal Microbiota After Antibiotic Treatment in Children With Invasive Pneumococcal Disease

Desiree Henares et al.

Summary: The study compared the nasopharyngeal microbiota of children with invasive pneumococcal disease who had been exposed to antibiotics with those who had not. The results indicated that antibiotic exposure led to higher bacterial richness and diversity in the nasopharyngeal microbiota, potentially resulting in a reduction of Streptococcus pneumoniae abundance.

Bacterial Diversity in House Dust: Characterization of a Core Indoor Microbiome

Jonathan R. Thompson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial communities in household vacuum dusts from two bioclimatic regions, UK and Greece. The findings revealed a common core house dust microbiome consisting of bacteria associated with human occupancy and common environmental sources, as well as a location specific microbiome reflective of the bioclimatic region. The study also highlighted citizen science as a powerful approach to access indoor residential environments and established the existence of a core house dust microbiome independent of bioclimatic region.

Spread of antibiotic resistance genes and microbiota in airborne particulate matter, dust, and human airways in the urban hospital

Zhen-Chao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study revealed the presence of diverse antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbes in indoor dust, PM10, and PM2.5 particulate matter in a hospital environment. Macrolides and aminoglycoside resistance genes were found to be abundant in the human airways and environmental samples, respectively. Network analysis showed co-occurrences of priority pathogens, ARGs, and mobile genetic elements, highlighting the potential link between environments and humans.
