Fish Skin Microbiomes Are Highly Variable Among Individuals and Populations but Not Within Individuals

Hanna Berggren et al.

Summary: This study found that fish skin-associated microbial communities vary greatly among populations and individuals and can impact host fitness. The composition of fish skin microbiomes differs from the bacterioplankton communities in the surrounding water and is highly variable among individuals. The variation in microbiome composition is primarily explained by individual hosts.

The Microbiome of the Built Environment: The Nexus for Urban Regeneration for the Cities of Tomorrow

Antonia Bruno et al.

Summary: Built environments have a significant impact on both human and ecosystem health. The loss of connection with natural environments, misuse of antibiotics, and highly sanitized environments have led to the loss of microbial communities. Urban planning needs to consider the diversity of ecosystem health and well-being factors, including social, cultural, and aesthetic values.

It's a Long Way to the Tap: Microbiome and DNA-Based Omics at the Core of Drinking Water Quality

Antonia Bruno et al.

Summary: Microbial communities have a significant impact on our health, yet the study of drinking water microbiomes is still limited. Advances in DNA sequencing and meta-omics allow for a deeper understanding of these communities and the prediction of microbiome changes over time. This research can greatly improve water management and reduce public health risks. Biodiversity in drinking water ecosystems is related to industrialization, and microbiome research can support sustainable water management through collaborations and responsible innovation.

Harnessing the microbiome to prevent global biodiversity loss

Raquel S. Peixoto et al.

Summary: Global biodiversity loss and mass extinction of species have become crucial environmental issues, leading to disruptions in various ecosystems and human health. Microbiome-targeted interventions, such as probiotics and microbiome transplants, are emerging as potential options to reverse biodiversity deterioration and enhance wildlife and ecosystem resilience. However, implementation of these interventions is urgently needed. This article summarizes concepts, challenges, and ethical aspects of microbiome stewardship, which involves managing ecosystem resources responsibly to restore organisms and ecosystem functions. A framework guiding the application of environmental and wildlife probiotics is proposed, with consideration of risks versus the consequences of inaction. Careful and responsible microbiome management is critical to counteract biodiversity loss, but practical and regulatory obstacles must be addressed to maximize its effectiveness.

Priorities for ocean microbiome research

Andre Abreu et al.

Summary: Studying the ocean microbiome is crucial for ocean governance, addressing climate change and pollution, and achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals. Microbes play essential roles in marine ecology, participating in nutrient cycles, carbon dioxide removal, and supporting marine food webs. Technological advances have allowed for a better understanding of the taxonomic and functional diversity of the global ocean microbiome. Understanding and protecting the ocean microbiome can contribute to addressing environmental and societal challenges.

Oxidative metabolism of gut and innate immune status in skin and blood of tench (Tinca tinca) fed with different insect meals (Hermetia illucens and Tenebrio molitor)

M. Carmen Hidalgo et al.

Summary: Searching for alternative protein sources in fish feeds is crucial for sustainable aquaculture, and insect-based meals emerge as a promising option. This study assesses the impact of insect meal on the innate immune system and oxidative metabolism in the digestive tract of tench (Tinca tinca). The inclusion of insect meal does not negatively affect growth or diet utilization, and promotes a higher antioxidant capacity in the digestive tract compared to fishmeal-based diets. However, the influence on the innate immune response of tench is limited. Tenebrio molitor seems to be a better alternative to Hermetia illucens for tench feeding.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fully replacing fishmeal with Tenebrio molitor larvae meal on the gut and skin microbiota of rainbow trout. The data showed slight changes in the microbiota after total replacement with insect meal, with no major effects on bacterial species richness and diversity. The study suggests that Tenebrio molitor larvae meal could be a viable alternative to fishmeal in aquafeeds.

Summary: The rise of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) is a growing threat to patient safety and healthcare systems worldwide. Citrobacter species are increasingly being identified as clinical multidrug-resistant pathogens, with carbapenemase groups such as KPC, OXA-48/-like, and MBL (VIM, NDM) detected. These carbapenemase genes are predominantly located on plasmids, highlighting the potential risk of dissemination in hospital settings.

Summary: The fish gut microbiome is influenced by various factors such as fish feed formulations and the built environment, with the gills and skin being more impacted by the surrounding environment. Diversity of the mucosal microbiome decreases with age in the gut, while being lower in fish from ocean net pens compared to indoor fish. Feed has a relatively minor impact on the microbial communities, while aeration equipment plays a crucial role in microbiome development in marine fish.
